Can the new Fires be used as a GPS like my iPhone?

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 6, 2012 2:46:45 PM PDT
Yes, I want to know this too. I also want to know about compass and inclinometer functions to use with my favorite astronomy programs.

Come on, a simple question...can we get an answer?

Lol. It doesn't have GPS. It's not a phone.

The iPad is not a phone but has GPS...that's my point...LOL

Guess I'll wait for the iPad mini then...

The fire is not a "true" tablet or ianything with all the bells and whistled. It's an amazon device that does videos and apps. It's a good product, but don't expect everything.

The Nexus 7 has the GPS built in and Android now offers offline maps for when you don't have a data connection.

It's a mobile device. I am surprised the 4g version does not include GPS.

This could be a deal breaker if there is no GPS. The Nexus 7 has a great gps and I use it for navigation(no contract required/wi-fi version), you just download the maps before you go. The 7" navigation screen is awesome.
Please tell me there is GPS in the new Fire HD.

If you watch the tour on the product page, they mention a GPS antenna.

So there is GPS?

I don't see any mention of it, anywhere. If someone else sees it, please let us know exactly where.

I agree... No GPS, No Deal. The Fire HD Quick Tour demo made a comment about GPS but I can find nothing further. I'd like to be able to use it with a mapping application.

I didn't hear anything about GPS in the video. They talked about the 4g stuff though.

SES51 says:
Yes it did... I had to go back and watch it a second time (about at the 3/4 mark). Just a 3 letter blurb with no explanation. I had to make sure I wasn't imagining something that I just wanted to hear.

Yes - refer to the 5min30 mark in the Quick Tour video.

iPad doesn't have a GPS.

Why does the description on the main page not have any mention of GPS?

In reply to an earlier post on Sep 6, 2012 9:19:18 PM PDT
GPS functionality is often embedded in cellular platform. iPad Wifi doesn't have it, the 3G(etc) do. Kindle non-LTE likely won't have it. the LTE version may.

I want to preorder it, but if there is no gps, I'll change my decision.
So please can you say clearly : Yes or No ??

We are all fellow Kindle owners here, H20, not Amazon representatives or employees... so we will not be able to clearly provide a response for you. I would suggest you contact Kindle Customer Service directly with your question.

After a somewhat thorough Google internet search I am sure that I still don't know if it has GPS or not, though I am leaning towards no. It's possible that it may act like a GPS via wi-fi or something - I do this alot on my iPod Touch which I know does not have GPS but there is enough Wi-Fi out there to know where I am on the Maps app - but no actual GPS antenna. Also no gyroscope, which seems weird on a 7" tablet which should have a bunch of games that are gyroscope dependent like racing and jumping. How can it know to switch to portrait or landscape without a gyroscope?

Amarth says:
GPS is actually more often included as a discrete component or as part of the connectivity module, so the lack of a cellular modem in the non-LTE version doesn't mean it can't have GPS.

While GPS would be nice, it's not a must for me.
