GG says:
What kind of HDMI cable (Brand) do I need to connect the Kindle Fire HD to the TV? I am concerned that I might buy the wrong type of HDMI cable.

There is no proper "brand" to buy. If it has the right connectors it will do just fine.

There are subtle differences in brands of HDMI cables, but they are so small that you will probably not notice. The rule of thumb is, the more expensive, the better the quality. That being said, it's almost never worth it to buy the highest quality unless you need a really long cable, because length is the biggest factor in signal degradation.

The Kindle Fire has a "micro-HDMI" port and your TV almost certainly has a full-size HDMI. So you will want a HDMI-to-microHDMI, sometimes just called a micro-HDMI, and make sure both ends are "male", sometimes also written as MtM or Male-to-Male. This is a very standard type of HDMI cable. The product description will tell you if you have the right kind.

GG, you can do a search on Amazon but this one is okay and has some length to it.

The Kindle Fire HD has an HDMI video OUT port, so you can connect to your TV, download a movie to the Kindle, and watch it play on your TV set.

The Kindle Fire HD has NO video IN port, so you can NOT hook the Kindle up to a TV set, tune the TV to a favorite station, and then watch that station program play on your Kindle.

MDH says:
I agree with most of the advice here (don't get a very long cable, etc) except the more expensive the better the cable comment. Monster cable and brands like that are extremely overpriced and you can get a good quality cable from monoprice.

I hook up the micro-HDMI to the set and select the input on the set, but then the Kindle complains that I have to set it directly to the TV and not a receiver. I am not going to a receiver. I have tried all the ports on the TV,including the ones that work with my satellite receiver, and the ports are fine. The TV complains that it is not getting a signal. When I try to run a movie, I get the error to connect directly to the TV and then the Kindle shuts down the movie. Tried 3 different cables and none of them work either. I am beginning to think I have a bad Kindle...well at least the port.
