When I plug the USB cord to pc and kindle fire (regardless of the port on the PC) I only get the message "you can now transfer files from your computer to Kindle." I can't get it to charge from PC.

Your USB ports probably do not have enough power to charge the Fire. Use the charger that came with the Fire, and a wall outlet.

Maybe your PC does not put out enough power to charge the Fire.

It is charging when you see that message. The Fire will only charge from a PC USB port when it is set in transfer mode (your computer sees it as a drive). It won't charge otherwise. Also, make sure WiFi is off first. I noticed a couple people say that theirs were not charging when WiFi was on but would with WiFi off.

Thank you but I did leave it on for over an hour and came back and the % did not change at all and the yellow light never went on. (The yellow light indicator that shows it is charging never went on). I suspect the PC is not powerful enough to charge the fire.

Is WiFi on or off? Try it with WiFi off.

You need to use a wall charger.
See the info under Charging Your Kindle:

The way you charge from a computer is you plug it in, when you see Transfer files screen, press the disconnect button. Then Turn off Wi-Fi and Turn brightness all they way down or sleep mode. Turning the volume all the way down may help to "turn off the speakers" :/. after wards the yellow light come on and Fire will charge as normal.

Ellen Ripley says:
I did a test of this some time ago. If you turn wi-fi off and everything else down, your PC will charge the Fire at the rate of about 3% every 30 minutes. (so if I'm calculating this right it would take about 16.5 hours to fully charge the old Fire on your PC) That's why we received a free wall charger with it.

@g veltaine: I can charge my Fire HD 7" using the USB cable and read on the Fire at the same time. BUT I have to use a particular one USB socket on my laptop; the other two don't supply enough power to allow that.
