Mini has a 7.9 inch screen. Looks like pre-order starts on Friday with delivery starting Nov 2.

So, Apple announced a basically upgraded iPad (4) and a new iPad mini.

They can keep it at these prices. Glad I didn't wait for this.
I also prefer the 7" screen rather than the 7.9"

16GB wifi $329 | 32GB wifi $429 | 64GB wifi $529
16GB wifi 4G $459 | 32GB wifi 4G $559 | 64GB wifi 4G $659

you'd have to be a hard core apple fan to buy this and pass up the 32gb nexus 7 at $249

I agree, it's Apple Pricey as usual.

Absolutely. I am glad I already sprang for the 32GB Nexus. Lot better deal.

J. Donahue says:
Apple actually put a picture of the Nexus and the Mini side by side for comparison.

Yes, the iPad 4th Generation is superior to the 3rd Generation they just came out with in the spring. For the same price.

The "big" iPad is being called the iPad with retina display at $499. iPad 2's are still $399.

I'm not clear if the iPad 3 was dropped or the info on the 4 hasn't yet been posted.

I was online with Cnet, waiting with bated breath to learn the price of the iPad Mini. The iPad is too expensive.
I've been holding off getting the Fire for over a year (I have the KK). The iPad Mini is too expensive.
Based on a poll, 1/3 will not buy the iPad Mini, 1/3 will, and 1/3 will buy the Fire or Nexus.
After some of the kinks are worked out of the new Fire, I might buy one.

$329 is insane, especially when it has a lower resolution screen than the Fire HD and, I believe, the Nexus too.

Also, I bet the folks who bought the brand new iPad 3 which was released only six months ago are pissed about the intro of the iPad 4 today... :-D

Exactly, so my "NEW" iPad is now the "SORTA OLD" iPad?

Old Rocker says:
They will still sell millions.

Based on some of what Cook said today, Apple is targeting businesses and schools.

Personally, I don't care. My "new" now "sorta old" ipad works for me. I didn't even get a new iPhone. I like my iPhone 4. But I can imagine a lot of folks will be annoyed. The iPad was not cheap...I got the 64GB LTE version and I sure don't feel like shelling out that kind of dough so soon.

And I noticed they didn't mention that the Fire and Nexus have more resolution! I haven't seen the Fire HD but the Nexus has a gorgeous screen.

I honestly don't understand this. Did they expect that Apple will stop releasing new devices, unless they give their placet?

No, not at all! We expect a new one once a year or so, but it has only been 6 months...that's not very long for a high end device to remain the latest and greatest. And some people HAVE to have the latest and greatest.

You see it all the time on this forum...people griping that if they knew a new Kindle was coming they wouldn't have got one yet and waited for the new one. Same thing.

I bought an iPad 3 last week... I would return it, except I don't want to have to deal with the Lightning connector.

and I just bought an ipad 3..lol I knew going into it that it would be "old" very soon, but not this soon. typical apple though.

Cassie Anne says:
I'm not. My iPad 3 still does what I bought it for when I bought in June. I wasn't expecting a new full-sized device to come out in October, but I was kind of expecting they'd roll one out in March/April.

*shrug*

With technology (Kindle, computer, tablet, phone), there's always something newer and shinier just around the corner.

Its odd that Apple's stock nosedived within the past hour. Apple releases it earnings on Thursday.

R. D. Clark says:
Biggest stumble Apple has made since they fired Steve Jobs.

First - "Hey, we had a great year, we sold 10 million New iPads. Oh, and now we're discontinuing it. Meet the Newer iPad, the one with the faster processor that should have been in the New iPad from the start."

Then - "Here's the iPad Mini, a repackaging of the iPad 2 from March 2011. We think you'll buy it just because it's an iPad, because it has absolutely nothing else that's new. Oh, and it costs $80 more than the 16MB Nexus 7 we're comparing it to."

When I used to say over and over that there would be no iPad Mini, I based my prediction on the belief that Apple was smarter than this, or at least that they had some sort of consistent vision for their product line. I was wrong about the first because I seem now to be wrong about the second.

ETC: $70 to $80

Agreed.

There's nothing about the iPad Mini that tempts me--low screen resolution, high price. It is impressively light, though.

I would think that MobileMe would be a serious contender for the biggest stumble.
