Improved Paperwhite Screen

I ended up returning four Paperwhites earlier this year due to blotchy and inconsistent screens. With the delay until December 20th for new shipping there was speculation that Amazon was attempting to fix the problem. Can anyone with a newly received Paperwhite confirm?

The delays were due to high demand. I do not believe there has been a substantial change in the technology. You may just not like the Paperwhite.

It wasn't the technology that was the problem for me. It was the lack of consistent quality, since apparently not all the Paperwhite devices are created equal.

There may be some variability among Paperwhite devices, but I believe there is also variability among users. There are enough credible reports about discoloration that I believe that it exists. However some of the complaints are about unevenness that is intrinsic to the technology; those folks should hold off until the tech improves.

I'd confirm that there's variability among users. One person put up images of three Paperwhites they had, with comments as to which one they thought was the most uniform, and whitest, lighting. I looked at the images and found one of the other two to be more so than the one he said.

In all the paperwhites I used there was variability amongst the models, which is not unexpected (at Christmas have everyone hold their iPhones side by side on high brightness for fun!), but also variability on the same device. Portions of the screen were brighter/dimmer/different colors than other parts of the screen. Posters claiming customer support was addressing the problem and the fact that Amazon stopped all new shipments until today implied that they may have been making adjustments.

Actually, the delay was a supply issue which was fixed well before today. I bought a PW expecting it to arrive 12/24. instead it arrived on 12/15.

I bought the paperwhite when it was first introduced and was in the first shipping wave. It had a splotchy screen. I had five replacements all with splotchy screens before I just returned the darn thing and decided to just wait it out until December.

I re-ordered in November with a December 21 ship date but low and behold, I received it about five days after I placed my order. It too had a splotchy screen. I got a replacement with a splotchy screen and returned both. I sat tight and re-ordered in December and just received a paperwhite last week. Actually, I ordered two.

I was assured each time that the problem would be fixed and customer service actually promised each time that I would get a no-splotchy screen paperwhite.

They both have splotchy screens.

I have spent hours and hours and hours with kindle specialists regarding this issue. I was told the December ones would be fixed. I was told that the splotchy screens were due to the oil in my fingers and to just simply clean the screen. I was told some goofy story comparing it to when you see water coming out of a garden hose.

This last go round I was told that ALL kindle screens are splotchy and it is the rule rather than the exception. I was told that there has been no changes in manufacturing. Of course, each kindle specialist will tell you something different.

I will keep these two even though they do not live up the ads nor my expectation because quite frankly, I am tired of dealing with this issue. It has worn me down! My mistake in all of this was that I sold my touch and my kk so I limped along with my iPad and my iPhone.

I look forward to the second generation paperwhite and the improvements. Meanwhile, I will plaster a smile on my face and enjoy all the good things regarding the paperwhite and not the faults that it comes with.
