Have Prime Student Membership -- don't have access to month of free Prime with my Kindle Fire

R. Borja says:
So I'm a Prime student member and I just bought a new Kindle Fire. Amazon tells me that I get a month of free Prime membership (including streaming free videos) with my new Fire.

See this page: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=200771470

Except that I don't have it. When I try to stream a Prime video, I'm told that I need to upgrade my account first (Prime student only gives you free shipping).

Has anyone else had this experience?

I have been on the line for 30 minutes with a customer-service rep and she has no idea what I'm talking about! I am on hold now for the second time. Help!

Sue says:
You only get streaming videos with a regular Prime membership. You have to be the Prime account holder also. If you are a guest you do not have access to everything. You just have the free two-day shipping.

I know it is a bummer and I do not know why they do not mention this but that is the way it is.

Try calling CS during regular Seattle business hours. Several other people have not been able to access the free month of Prime benefits, either.

If a person buys the Fire, they get a free month of Prime, with full benefits.

I AM the primary account holder for Prime.

I think he's talking about how he's supposed to get a free month of Prime with the purchase of the Fire. It seems that his Student Prime is interfering with his free month.

Yes, Amazon for some reason only recognizes me as a Prime student member.

R. Borja says:
Blaiz -- thanks for that suggestion. I may just do that. I have been on the phone now for 1 HOUR with a customer-service rep and she's as befuddled as I am. Now on hold for 4th time ...

From the "Amazon Prime and Kindle Fire" help page. Note the last sentence:

Customers who have not used Prime instant videos over the past year will automatically be given a free month of Amazon Prime when they first activate their Kindle Fire. Eligible customers receiving free shipping benefits as an Amazon Mom, Amazon Student or as an invited guest of another Prime member will receive a month of Prime digital benefits, which includes Prime instant videos and Kindle Owners' Lending Library. If you're already a paid or free trial member of Prime when you register your device, you'll be able to seamlessly use your benefits without interruption or changes to your membership.

R, we weren't responding to you, we were responding to Book Reader's post.

Just call Kindle CS during regular Seattle office hours, since they have different levels of service available. As I wrote, other people have had the same problem.

Make sure you are contacting Kindle CS, not Amazon CS.

(D'oh! Side note: That means Prime members don't get a month extension before having to renew? Oh well. It's good value regardless... but I do feel just a tad cheated.)

Blaiz: Thanks and thanks to everyone who as replied. I'm sorry I'm so grumpy! Am now on the phone with a Kindle specialist (I got transferred ...)

You have to also not have taken advantage of a free trial of full prime in the past that included streaming videos to qualify. If you do qualify, the period starts automatically as soon as you register your Kindle Fire (confirmed from an account with student prime, but no previous trials w/ streaming videos)

I ALWAYS ask to be transferred to a Kindle Specialist (usually get the US or South Africa - I love the South Africa contingent) now for more technical problems. Regular pseudo trained Kindle CS can handle registering, deregistering, kindle content, refunds, and canceling orders. Otherwise, you need someone with a little more background (and even then - you MAY need someone higher up the food chain ;-)

Especially now. They probably "quick-trained" a bunch of new reps for the Fire and the Touch so they can answer basic questions.

Yes, I encountered that in the Philippines (first time when selecting problems with Device), and they won't transfer you unless THEY determine you need to be transferred. However, as luck would have it - I did warrant something they couldn't handle.

Yes, they did mention "Just Trained".

OK, I just got off the phone with my 5th-6th customer-service rep. The three folks I spoke to in the U.S. understood my problem, but two couldn't figure out how to help me. The third one was able to help: He said there is a glitch in the system and that he is issuing a "trouble" ticket to the developers to fix the problem. I told him that other folks here on the forum have also had this issue. He said that it takes 24-48 hours to fix the problem, and that he will call me on Friday (since Thursday is Turkey Day) to give me an update of the issue. He said it should be resolved by then. I'll let you know what I find out!
