C.J., have you adjusted settings on the TV?

I don't know about the 7", but it seems like the gorgeous picture on my 8.9" looks significantly worse than 1080p when I plug it into my TV via HDMI. So does regular streaming from Amazon to my TV through my computer vs streaming to my Fire HD, so maybe it's just a trick of my eyes or something.

The Roku will look great (I use one frequently), and is unconnected to your Kindle. You can watch Amazon Instant Video with a Roku without owning a Kindle.

The HDMI (High Definition Media Interface) cable won't really affect the understanding is that a cheap one is as good as an expensive one, except that the length of the cable (over a certain length) could affect it.

The quality of the original source would affect it, and so would the quality of the TV.

I'm not an expert on this, though...I'll test it out myself and let you know. :)

I watch movies and tv shows all of the time with my 8.9 Fire. The picture is absolutely fantastic and if you use earbuds, you would swear the sound is coming from all around you. I will use this rather than my flat screen any day to watch movies. I use both Prime and Netflix.

that would be great Bufo ! I bought the 8.9" but not sure about the size while reading so I was thinking to exchange it for the 7" if the streaming quality was the same...Does the 1080p HD or 720pHD depend on the device itself (kindle) or on the streaming device (HDM cable or roku) or both?

The product page says that the 8.9" can do up to 1080p HD and the 7" says 720p HD.

I'll test my 8.9" 4G within the next few days. Connecting the 7" to my TV via HDMI, the TV told me that it was 720.

By the way, I changed the picture quality settings (I reduced color saturation for one thing), and that made a big difference in how it looked.

Good advice. I love my two Roku's. They are the most trouble-free streaming devices I've owned.

The 8.9 is a bigger screen, but will usually receive the same amount of data per second as a 7", and at these sizes, you will never see the difference.

The source site normally does not know which device you have and will send the same MBPS (Mega Bits Per Second) regardless. On most PPV streaming sites, you can select to receive HDX (1080P), HD (720P) or SD (480P) input. Subscription sites, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime will measure your router's capability and send the signal they think you can view without pauses, but they still don't know what viewing device is at the other end.

At the 7" to 10" range, the real deciding factors are your vision, and your anticipated uses for the tablet (home or mobile). Both sizes will be beautiful even at 480P.

And just so you know, If you are considering a 4G Kindle Fire, video streaming via 4G instead of WiFi can take up an entire month's allocation of data in under an hour.

I would recommend that you get the 7" Fire HD (unless you really want the larger size) and get a Roku box for dedicated streaming.

720P HD Roku:
Roku HD Streaming Player (Old Model)

1080P HD Roku:
Roku 2 XD Streaming Player 1080p (Old Version)
