Try on a different computer (a friend's perhaps). If it works on another computer, then your computer is what you need to troubleshoot. It could be a corrupted file (happens with all computers) or some security programs will block USB ports or hardware or ....

If the Kindle isn't recognized on another computer, then it is the Kindle and usually a reset to factory will resolve that issue.

The only other thing I can think of to rule out is the cable, then. Have you connected any other device with that cable? If it's not the cable, my best advice is to have Kindle customer service troubleshoot it for you.

I have tried rebooting both the computer & the Kindle Fire with no positive results.
It used to show the Fire but it went away about a month ago & hasn't showed since.

Did you try a different USB port? A different cable? A reboot?

@Janine: What sort of documents? Which model Kindle? Where did you put the files - which folder on the Kindle? It is impossible to try to help you without more information.

I had this problem, too. I disconnected it, turned it off & then back on, plugged it in again & it showed on My Computer. Womski

Is it where it says it cannot find a driver for it? That is ok, just go to "My Computer" and you will see it as an external mass storage device. You can transfer files to it by dragging and dropping.

Is your Kindle turned on? Not in sleep mode?

I plug the kindle fire into my laptop and the computer doesn't read it, says Windows does not recognize it. Any suggestions?
