When I was a kid we moved from New York state to Washington state. There were 5 of us kids in the back seat from ages 3-12. We managed without technology. We even camped out the whole way. No money for motel rooms. We had a lot of fun.

My parents moved from DC to California with 3 kids in the car - ages 10, 5 and 3. We had books (for reading and coloring, ViewMasters and bags full of colored pipe cleaners. You'd be amazed how many different things kids can make from pipe cleaners.................

she is providing "nicer" ideas.

I have four kids and not one of them at the age of 2 had any technology in the backseat to keep them quiet. Simple parenting made that happen.

VELCRO! No, not to restrain him, but that's not a bad idea. To let him play with.
A calculator.
A dead cell phone.
A toy cell phone.

SNACKS!

Simple, an update came out after the Kindle was boxed up. This can happen with all computers. My new Dell Venue 8 tablet updated right after I opened it. So did my Toshiba Thrive as well as my Toshiba laptop.

Next time don't purchase a tablet just because of the price. Make sure it has the features you want and then look at price.

or duct tape

Well, yeah. It's been sitting on the shelf since the manufacture/release date. There HAVE been updates since then; they don't automagically pop onto a sleeping/shipping-contained device.

I got the Fire (actually several) because I'm very much plugged into the Amazon ecosystem. I don't own a single iThing. But the Mini might be a better fit for you.

return it ..... funny .... what did parents do to shut their screaming kids up in the backseat of cars before technology came around????

we bought this for my son (2) for long car trips to watch movies so he isn't screaming in the back seat while we're trapped on the highway 4 hours form home.

We went with the kindle due to the "sale" price, when we could've ordered an ipad mini for the same price (once you ad the $15 add removal, which I wont be doing because thats ridiculous), and I would have had a camera, and been able to create custom backgrounds and even had it engraved to prevent theft.

Considering sending it back for a refund and going with the ipad, we'll have see.

*update, as I finish typing this, the kindle is preforming it's first update, and it's been out of the box for about an hour, what the hell?

You're welcome; glad you talked to them and got it worked out.

Folina, Thank you for help, It still would not unlock, I talked to 2 amazon techs, one of which was a kindle specialist. It still did not respond after several different attempts. They said no problem, they are sending me a new replacement kindle at no cost to me including return shipping on the old one. I was surprised at how nice they were, that is great customer service. But thanks to you for pointing me in the right direction to get this resolved.

The slider won't slide across? Have you tried a hard reset? Make sure it's charged, then remove the charger. Press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds, ignoring any message on the screen. Release the button, then wait a couple seconds.

Then, press it again once, and walk away. Let it do its thing; it should reset to the unlock screen. See if it will slide then.

If not, you'll need to contact Customer Service by clicking "Help" at the top of this page, then following the breadcrumbs to "Contact Us". (Don't try email; it's useless.)

I have not used my kindle HD fire in about 6 months. Now when I turn it on I get a padlock icon and I cannot remove it.And it says to verify that the kindle is registered and I am connected to a wireless connection. I registered it when I purchased it last year, and it worked fine. Now it is locked and does not respond to anything. All I can do is turn it on or off. Please help me with this problem.

If people are close enough to you when you're opening a Kindle cover to see the screensaver, then THEY ARE TOO CLOSE! Tell them to back the $%&@ away.

In my opinion, I prefer people not to see Elmo/Sesame Street on my screen when I am in public...just sayin'.
