make sure and look down in the Product Details and it will show the language that the book is in

on the Touch Language of dictionary must = language of book as shown in the product details

also, you do have instant translation on your kindle - you should see in the dictionary not found box that comes up a More - click on that and you'll find the option to translate into and out of 16 different languages and as an added bonus it will translate whole phrases. It odes require a wireless connection though and can be a bit slow

Yes thanks a lot..... Finally resolved :-) you were right- it is the book itself. So how should I buy Spanish books now? To make sure that the dictionary will capture it?

try one of these free books and see if it works on it

Conversación en La Catedral (Primer capítulo) (Spanish Edition)
El Papa Francisco en Brasil (Spanish Edition)
Spanish Reader Advanced III: Spanish Short Stories (Spanish Reader for Beginners, Intermediate & Advanced Students nº 7) (Spanish Edition)
Las aventuras de un cadaver (Spanish Edition)
El héroe discreto (Primer capítulo) (Spanish Edition)

I'm listing quite a few as I live in France and my country filter likely gives me different results than yours

CBRetriever says:
it's entirely possible that the problem lies with the book and not the dictionary - di you get the book from Amazon?

if so, please go to the product page for the book and copy and paste the address (url) at the top of the page here

for instance, this book: El Secreto del Gigante/The Giant's Secret (A Spanish/English Story) if you look down in the product details says "Language: English" which means a Spanish dictionary will not work on it and most 3rd party books are not properly encoded as being in Spanish

when you do a search on your Manage Your Kindle page, there isn't a Real Academia Española el Diccionario de la lengua española listed?

maybe it's already under your Dictionaries collection on your Home page (end of hour home page listings) - if it's not on your account, Amazon customer service can replace it

I'm also going to suggest a reboot with wireless on (in case you've forgotten, do that by holding the power on for a full 30 seconds)

I have Spanish dictionary but it just does not let me use it

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 27, 2013 5:11:30 AM PDT
I have only French Portuguese German and Italian :-(

CBRetriever says:
download the Spanish dictionary that Amazon has provided: Real Academia Española el Diccionario de la lengua española

you'll find it in your Cloud under a dictionaries collection at the very end of the listings and then you'll find you have the ability to set a Spanish dictionary after it's been downloaded

So the new dictionary has been delivered but I cannot do anything anyway.... There is no option I can choose from when I go to dictionaries like I can with English for example... I will go through support but as you said - they are useless as they will take me through the same steps not understanding that I cannot actually "press" any option in Spanish dictionaries and there is no arrow .... grrrrr

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 27, 2013 4:17:09 AM PDT
Thanks :-) will do the same

CBRetriever says:
two possible problems

1. the book is not properly encoded as being in Spanish
2. the dictionary is an older one - my first translation dictionary was (rather stupidly in my opinion) encoded as being in English, thus the French-English dictionary would not work on books in French. I deleted the old dictionary from my account, purchased a new one and it worked perfectly. I had to first download the Amazon provided French dictionary and then my newly purchased one showed up as an option to select under the French dictionaries and I could make it the default one

someone managed to, after a lot of time and hassle, convince Customer Support that the problem was with the dictionary and not the kindle and was able to convince them to refund his money for the original one and he could then purchase the new one (it was either the Merriam-Webster or Collins Spanish-English dictionary)

and changing the language on your kindle in spite of what Customer Support tells you is not necessary in order to set a French Dictionary - all you need to do is download the one Amazon Provides (you can find it under Manage Your Kindle) and that will automatically create the option to change dictionaries for that language. In other words, they really don't know what they're talking about when it comes to the foreign dictionaries

I did several times and after 3 weeks I just gave up to be honest because they just ignored it.... I might try again.... thanks

You'll need to contact amazon and tell them that. Basically you would need to re-download the Spanish->English dictionary. It worked for me.

I have problem with dictionaries since last year on my kindle and I tried to solve it various times with Amazon support over the phone and emails and that never happened :-( I download books in English and Spanish. While I can use English Oxford Dictionary, don't really need it anyway, when I read Spanish book it does not look up words in Spanish at all. Even I change settings to Spanish and bla bla bla, it still does not look it up in Spanish....

How can I deal with it?
I have been through support a number of times....

Any help?

Marco says:
Problem: while reading a book in a foreign language and highlighting a word, no dictionary entry is found, since the dictionary is not te correct one.

Solution: Install Calibre, import the book you are reading. Edit the book metadata (right click, edit metadata). At the bottom of the freshly opened metadata window there is a "Languages" text entry. Select the language(s) you want to tell your kindle the book contains. Send back your book to the kindle.

If you've done everything properly your kindle will not fail this time to open the correct dictionary when selecting a word in that book.

hope this helps,

Marco

I had the same problem and thanks to D. Garvey's suggestion, I've just fixed it!! You definitely have to set the language of your book. And the program Calibre has this option. One just has to operate the changes in the Metadata!

Thanks for the feedback. I actually did reboot the unit several times with no luck. But I'm sure a reboot would probably work for some people.

I had a similar problem on my new Kindle Touch, except I couldn't get it to recognize any of the English dictionaries that I already owned from prior Kindles. The solution was easy. For me I just changed the default language from "English (United States)" to "English (United Kingdom)". Waited for my Kindle to reboot. Selected my English dictionary. Made sure everything worked, then set my language back to "English (United States)". Now my dictionary works fine.

Hope this helps someone with their Kindle solve the dictionary problem.

I've just received my kindle touch 3G. Both my Spanish and Portuguese dictionaries don't seem to work with the books I had purchased before. I suspect that the dictionaries have been tagged as English dictionaries(bug) rather than dictionaries of Spanish or Portuguese. Both the Spanish and Portuguese dictionaries are under the English dictionary category. I think the bug spring from support for multi-lingual books with multi-lingual dictionaries but the software to tag them probably set them to English default.

If you have a Touch have you applied that latest update? That contains the ability to do translations as well as landscape mode.

On my K4 basic kindle, I was unable to use a french to english dictionary as the default french dictionary, but I could set the english to french one as the default english dictionary which I thought was a bit weird.

No, so far they are only bilingual dictionaries. There's a French language dictionary all in French.
