I suggest you contact Customer Service, John, since the reboot didn't work. They will troubleshoot with you, and if it needs replacing, they will give you instructions of how to do so, if it is still under warranty. Good luck!

I suggest using the "Phone" option. You send your phone number, and they call back, usually within a minute or less. Keep in mind it IS Christmas Eve, so they may be more busy than usual, and it may take just a little longer, but probably no longer than five minutes.

Tried rebooting by holding power button and recharging to no avail.

If the top half of the screen is working, it sounds like the display is broken. It might be time for a new one.

By "bare boned Kindle" I THINK you are referring to the Basic (now $69) Kindle?? Kindle, 6" E Ink Display, Wi-Fi - Includes Special Offers (Black)

Try rebooting, by holding the "power on" button for 30 seconds. The Kindle should then reboot, which could take a few minutes. See if that fixes the problem.

S. Prewitt says:
Charge the battery for at least 15 minutes (more is better) with wall charger, then unplug charger and reset Kindle.

I would check out your Manage Your Kindle page & see what it says.

It is a bare boned Kindle, the add appeared when the Kindle was turned off and will not leave

Which Kindle are you referring to, John? And what were you doing when the ad popped up? Were you in the browser, or in a game app or...what? We need more details.
