30 books doesn't take that long to download but remember that your Kindle has to index the books. Download 10 - 15 books and then leave the Kindle plugged in and sit overnight to allow those books to index. Then download the remainding the next day.

I say plugged in as indexing takes a lot of power and will drain the battery faster than expected.

Updates are kind of automatic. I don't believe you can turn the auto updates off on the Kindles unless you turn wireless off. The updates are usually downloaded to your device while in sleep mode so if you turn wireless off unless you are downloading books, you won't get the update.

I have maybe 30 books on my kindle fire hd. I wish they would have told me what kind of update they were installing. I asked them.

Anytime you install software on a computer, you can have a bad install. I've even had a bad install of Windows after a format. It happens. Unfortunately with a Kindle, a reinstall is often not possible by the customer so they replace the unit.

I only download 20 to 30 books at a time so it doesn't take long and my Kindle doesn't slow down. I don't know how many books you are downloading but why download more than you can read in a couple of months.

SeaLevel274 says:
What model of Kindle is it? Is it a Keyboard Kindle in the Amazon case with the metal hooks?

If so, take it out of the case.

My 3rd kindle started acting bad yesterday. It kept restarting itself in the middle of reading or playing a game and it froze up. I contacted Amazon and they said a software update was installed yesterday. They said to restart it. That only made it worse. Now they are going to send me my 4th kindle because of this updated software. My kindle was doing perfect and now I have to go through all the downloading AGAIN....Has anyone else had this problem?
