The 8.9 reads aloud books that allow it very nicely everyone here so far has told you how to do it.

Mary McManus says:
Not all books allow text to speech, however. If a book does, you only need to tap the center of the page to bring up the menu and options, and at the bottom, you will see on the left of the progress bar a play arrow. Underneath the progress bar, it says, "Tap Play to listen to Text-to-Speech."

while in a book, tap to bring up the menu, tap settings, tap more options, tap on text to speech. That will put a play button on the progress bar. Tap the play button to start text to speech.

R. D. Clark says:
I think he's asking about using text-to-speech on his KFHD 8.9" which he apparently was able to use on a 7" FireHD but cannot with the new one.

Unfortunately, not owning a Fire, I cannot help.

Bill Hansen says:
I think you can read lots of different things on your Fire, if you spend a little time going over the manual. Take it slowly, one thing at a time. Without modifying mine at all, I was able to read emails, web sites, and a short e-book the same day I got the Fire 8.9.
