I use my iPhone - it will read to you. It is also lighter than my new or older devices. "Get caught reading"

Nope, don't know about smaller increments.
Thinking about it, the ability to go back a page certainly ain't that bad. Beats not being able to go back at all.

If you read my earlier post from yesterday, I found a workaround on how to do that - smaller increments.

Try this video on how to do the TTS on an iPhone.

As far as I can figure out, you have to go back or forward a whole page.
If anyone else knows how to go back or forward in smaller increments, please let us know.

I don't use it often, and mostly in iBooks because most of my books are ePubs, but I find it helpful to bookmark the page and X out of the screen reader when I'm done using it.

This feature is very cool, but I get the "nothing to read on screen" message sometimes also. I just keep trying until it works. Sometimes closing the Kindle app, or iBook app, then relaunching seems to help.

Try it in the iBooks app, too.

OK ..I'll keep at it!

Then it's only acknowledging one finger touching the screen. Put your two fingers flat against the device just above where the screen starts and swipe down from there. Try the other hand, or try different fingers. You'll get the hang of it.

OK ..Thanks again for all your help. The Weather forecast does also appear on the home screen ..unless I move to top left, staying away from middle. The Voice told me "there was nothing to read on that screen" (Home).

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 28, 2016 9:11:23 AM PST
No, but I suspect that doesn't have anything to do with that particular app. You're probably not applying equal pressure with both fingers when the get to the screen.

You can test this by going to any home screen and pulling down with just one finger. That pull-down is probably the same thing, and what's there is defendant upon your notification settings.

Do any other things happen when you swipe down ... other than the TTS Toolbar ...like the weather

I'm not sure what you mean by various.

Good to know ..thanks I will proceed with Update. Do you get various results when swiping down in Kindle App?

You're welcome.

Thanks for the info! I finally have my iphone reading TTS now, but I can still use the Fire phone ...& play with it.

For what it's worth, I find it more effective to use my second and third fingers of my right hand, rather than the first and second.

If you're already at iOS 9 or higher, there's no reason not to update to the newest. There's just security and bug patches, it's not a whole firmware update like going from 7 to 8, or 8 to 9.

OK. I had my settings correct. I finally got the Speech tool bar to appear in the Kindle App (with a book open) by moving to the left of the camera lens.. just a little & then swiping down. I do have longish fingernails, so I usually use a padded stylus for typing & such. Now that I know it actually works, I'll just have to learn the sweet spot! Thanks for hanging with me! The phone wants to update ... keeps bugging me. Now I am afraid to<GGG>

Okay, then go here --

Watch the video and check the rest of your settings against that.
