Exact same problem as well, with a Kindle Fire. I also swapped the cable out and the device was instantly recognized.

You're replying to a post from 2011. It's probably resolved by now.

I had same issue - shut your computer down and restart it with it plugged in and it should appear.

I had the same problem of Kindle icon not showing up on my Mac (Lion)...Paperwhite 2nd gen...the Official white Kindle USB cord was the only thing that worked for me...think it came with earlier version but tried two other usb cords, changing ports, restarting, beads and feathers...finally the kindle cord and it popped up immediately...wonder...I was even transferring legally downloaded books...

Is the Android file transfer free. When I went to the site it said it charged 19.95 for it?

In reply to an earlier post on Mar 2, 2013 10:11:51 PM PST
I downloaded the Android for file transfer you mentioned but I still cannot transfer mobi files from my Mac to my Kindle. How do you do it?

I second that Woody's suggestion works. http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
Still no Kindle icon on the desktop, but you can keep the Android File Transfer icon in your dock and it'll open each time you plug in your Kindle. Same thing.
I still can't get my Kindle to charge from my Mac, however. It charges from all other sources - just not my computer. And no, it's not the cable. Amazon even sent me a new cable for free and neither cables work with my Mac. Irritating, but not catastrophic.

Woody´s suggestion really worked. Should be bumped to the top would save a lot of people the time to go through the other (not useful) tips!

Woody says:
>>>Solution to everyone's Mac Device Finder problem: On the Kindle, swipe the orange bar as if unlocking the kindle for use. At this point, the kindle will automatically recognize the computer and will show a message "You can now transfer files from your computer to Kindle."

Not on my KF HD it doesn't. It says "Some computers require a free file-transfer utility to copy files between the computer and your Kindle. If you need this utility, please open your computer's browser and navigate to kindle.com/support/downloads " Following this link takes you to www.android.com/filetransfer --as I described above.

Woody says:
The Kindle Fire and its HD cousin do not mount on the Mac's desktop. In order to see the contents of your Fire and move files between it and your Mac, download Android File Transfer onto your Mac. You can find Android File Transfer by going to android.com and searching for it --or you can just google it.

I had the same problem on both my Macs. It's the cable. I tried it with the usb cable I got with my new BlackBerry and it worked instantly.

Solution to everyone's Mac Device Finder problem: On the Kindle, swipe the orange bar as if unlocking the kindle for use. At this point, the kindle will automatically recognize the computer and will show a message "You can now transfer files from your computer to Kindle." From there, it will automatically show up in the Finder menu under Devices as "SDCARD." Once you open the drive, you'll see a bunch of folders that you can open and modify as you please. After you do this once, it should connect automatically to your Mac. Hope this helps, CW

I'm having the same problem. I've tried rebooting and different USB ports. I don't have this problem with any other external devices. Seems like a software issue with the Kindle.

You are using the Kindle USB cable? Sorry had to ask, I don't have any other suggestions. It shows up on my iMac and my MacBook.

It says USB Drive mode, then a line, then a picture of a USB cable and another paragraph of text below that, then a tiny picture of a battery.

Be sure you've tried every USB port on the computer.

Also, shut down the computer completely then start it up again. When it's fully booted up and all icons are finished drawing on the desktop, then plug in the Kindle without starting any other applications.
