I had the same problem and with help from Amazon tech support via chat I fixed it manually download the latest software update to your kindle even if it shows you already have this version. Note you need to do this by connecting your kindle to a computer. Downloading the new software to your computer and dragging it to the kindle drive as you would to a USB. You need to drag it into the drive and not a specific folder. Once done properly eject the device from the computer and unplugg it. Now within your device go to home >settings>menu>update device. If this is grated out reboot your kindle by sliding and holding the power switch for 40 secs if your kindle restarts automatically great otherwise slide and release the power switch for it to come on again. At this time your kindle should now show 3G and black bars on the top right hand side. IMPORTANT: during this whole process your kindle's wireless should be turned on but at no time should you be connected to a WIFI network.

Hope this solution works for you as it did for me.

They offered me a discount to buy a new Kindle. No Thanks I will NEVER buy another kindle. For a lot less money I bought a Toshiba tablet of similar size and downloaded the Amazon Kindle app for free from Google Play. Now I still have all my books and a much for functional device.

They did the same thing to me and didn't tell me that it would tank the kindle and make it useless. The device cannot be register on Wifi only thru the 3g like when I first go it.

Any solution for 3G? It is only available for Kindle Store ... It is a poor connection. I bought my kindle with 3G (and pay more) because I thought it would be useful ... I don't understand

There hasn't been a software update on the K3/KK for quite some time. The latest is 3.4 and by now your K3 should have updated automatically. Have you tried going to a place with free WiFi like Starbucks or McDonalds?

*Minor Update* I actually have a K3, not a K2 as I'd previously thought.

Still no G3 or WiFi. Has anyone had any luck with software / firmware updates solving this issue?

If he's certain it has Wi-Fi, he must have a K3. I bought a K2 back during the price war in 2010. It would have been cool to have Wi-Fi on it because AT&T had rotten coverage in my area at the time. Back on topic, my k3 is downloading perfectly on 3G. Perhaps it is a coverage problem in Australia?

I turned wireless on on my K2, connected to 3G with 5 bars, and downloaded 2 books. i also have not had any trouble with 3G or WiFi on any of my K3s.

My K2 International will no longer connect to 3G (whispernet) in Australia. I've tried the factory reset a number of times. As wifi was never available, I now have to download via a computer. My mother, who has a more recent 3G version (K3?) has also not been able to connect to 3G. It sounds like an endemic problem.

K2s never had WiFi, just 3G. Last time I downloaded to my K2 it worked fine. That was the end of April. I'll give it a try when I get home but I don't believe there is a "shelf life". There are 1st generation Kindles out there that are still working.

My K3 lost it's 3G capabilities about a month ago but WiFi still worked. I could deal. Just got off the phone with a Kindle rep from Amazon who had me Factory Reset the unit and turned it into a brick. WiFi is now lost. The 611 Page (enter Alt+YQQ while after hitting the Menu button) now shows 'Sorry - WAN info is not available at this time.'

My only options:

1) I can buy a new Paperwhite 3G for $150 -- they "kindly" discounted it by the princely sum of $39.
2) Suck it up and transfer everything via USB cable. So much for my subscriptions that are regularly updated.

Both of these are unacceptable and if Amazon does indeed have a "shelf life" on Kindles, that points to planned obsolescence!

And, for the record, I have a VERY good router, robust FIoS connection and spent over a decade in the Engineering Depts of a couple of cellular carriers.

You all might save yourself some problems if you would buy a good router and hook it up to your internet modem and it will give you wifi for all devices and all PCs plus TVs with built in WIFI. Linksys is a very good router to buy. I have a KK 3G also and I have never had to use the 3G on it. All of my devices pickup my routers name and I just enter my password and everything is connected. Just a FYI message. :)

What you should have said is 3G only connects with WIRELESS turned on. Wireless is a term that encompasses both the 3G connection and the WiFi connection.

The buzz you hear in nearby speakers is an AT&T thing. It happens with cell phones on their network too. It's really annoying at my office since all the company cell phones are on AT&T.

There are separate updates for the Kindle Keyboard with 3G (Update_kindle_3.4_B006.bin), and without 3G (Update_kindle_3.4_B008.bin). Possibly some of the issues could have been caused by getting the wrong update, and might be cured by getting the right one.

I've found that 3G only connects with Wireless turned on, but no active WiFi connection. So if you turn wireless on and it connects via WiFi, you'll need to have it 'forget' the WiFi connection to force it to open a 3G wireless connection.

Has anyone else noticed that when Kindle 3G is active it will make nearby speakers buzz, even with the speakers off? I have a set of external speakers by my laptop where I work on Kindles. Any time I turn on a Kindle with 3G I'll start getting a buzz from the speakers.

I had my 3G stop working and after spending some time on both chat and phone they told me I have to either have it connect to the a wifi network or forget the network and the 3G will work. I used to be able to turn the wifi off and have the 3G work but it's that way no longer. All the problems seem to be coming from the last update which means Amazon is responsible for the problem. Guess they got too busy with all the newer devices.

Thank you all for all your info a friend forwarded this site to me. I have had exactly the same problems as the above, I also purchased the 3G version as we do a lot of travelling. Now also have to download via my computer. After numerous e-mails and chat room discussions with support people from Kindle no solution was found. In fact I was told I could purchase a 'new' refurbished kindle at a reduced price as unfortunately my one year guarantee had expired. So rather disillusioned!!!!!!!!!

I had the same problem and I think, it has to to with an automated update from kindle! I got an update, and since then there was no 3G-functionality. after factory-resetting there was even no WLAN-functionality. seems like amazon is responsible for this troubles.

I actually had exactly the same problem (in Germany)! There seems to be no solution.
