I startws this at http://www.kuforum.co.uk/kindleusersforum/thread-9077.html but no replies so far.

I took my kindle on holiday expecting to be able to connect to the free wi-fi that was available at the hotel and other places in the resort. Everytine I tried to connect I got an 'Unable to connect. Do you want to try manual settings?' As I didn't know the settings I couldn't connect that way!

According to the user quide all I need to do is click 'connect' and away you go.

Any ideas why this is not working as described?

you may need a password to the hotel wifi - check with the hotel desk and see if they can help you

Thanks for the reply, but no password required. It was a free connection. My wife's phone connected automatically with no problem. Is there a problem with the Kindle?

try telling your kindle to forget the previous network, that should make it search for a new one and hopefully recognize the hotels wifi

you could try a reboot?

also, I understand some wfi systems aren't compatable with kindles (boingo or something like that people have mentioned)

you can find their wifi on the list and click on it to select it?

and you might try here too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle/ref=cm_cd_rvt_np?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx3IRFCNF3E5K2W&cdPage=1&cdThread=Tx3VGZRVMEFNXXK#CustomerDiscussionsNew

it's the amazon.co.uk kindle users forum - there are likely more people awake over there

I tried a re-scan in various parts of the hotel as they had over 14no. wi-fis available, but nothing worked. I gave up in the end. The User Guide makes it seem so easy. Should have known better I guess.

Thanks for the link to the UK discussion group. I will ask the question there.

I did try a re-boot as well.

Does anyone from Amazon read/respond to these threads? Be good to get a response from them.

did you tell the kindle to forget the previous network? also which kindle do you have? there was an update that changed how one of the kindles settings work for accessing wifi

What good would a response do? You would need to call in so they can help troubleshoot the problem.

JJ: Call in where? I got the Kindle as a present last year, and is the first time I've tried connecting outside of my home wi-fi.
