N. Clark says:
I need help knowing how to copy something from a bookon my Kindle Fire and paste it into a Note on my Kindle Fire.

Q says:
I don't know what kind of Kindle you have, but on the Fire, you cannot copy & paste text from a Kindle book, perhaps due to copytright issues.

It's clunky, but it can be done. First you have to highlight the text you want to copy. Then you have to go to the notes and marks file, drop it onto your hard drive and open it up. Then you can find the particular quote you've highlighted, and copy and paste it.

Q says:
Is the notes & highlights file on the Fire readable (ASCII text?) They are on the e-inks but not sure on the Fire.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 8, 2012 11:01:25 PM PDT
I gave the basic outline for e-ink kindles (as you can tell from my "drop it onto the hard drive" comment). N.Clark hasn't said what sort of kindle it is (or, indeed, if it's a kindle at all, for that matter!). But since you can sync highlights between kindle apps and the kindle, so long as N.Clark has an e-ink kindle as well, if his/her original question was about the Fire, it can still be done. Just requires a sync between doing the highlighting and opening the file.

Q says:
Makes sense. I was only asking about the Fire for personal reasons.

And fair enough too. If I sounded a little testy it was at the lack of information given by the OP (is this about a kindle? if so, which model? what sort of "Note" in what program?), who doesn't appear to have even come back to read the answers given.

I'm in Australia, so don't have any personal experience with a Fire (where it's not released yet), but I'm assuming the operation is similar to K4PC, so using the sync feature should get around the difficulty.

N. Clark says:
Thank you for your response. I don't know about hard drive on my Kindle Fire. How do I get to that?

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 10, 2012 11:49:48 PM PDT
I wasn't talking about the hard drive on your Fire; I was talking about copying the notes and marks file from an e-ink kindle onto a PC/Mac.

As I've already said, I have no personal experience with the Fire. If you have an e-ink kindle as well you can still follow my suggestions above after syncing the Fire with the e-ink kindle, but since you didn't give us that detail, or any detail about which kindle you're using or where you want to copy and paste to, it's very hard to give informative answers.

If you use Calibre, its very easy to do. Here's how:

What is Calibre??

Calibre is library management software. I would suggest googling it.

N., once you highlight something in a Kindle book (and sync with Amazon), the highlight is available at

You can copy and paste from there. I haven't done that all from the Kindle Fire, but it should work. I may try and test it later.

if you have an OCR program, you can take a screenshot of the page and put it through OCR and copy and paste the part onto word. Works best with Adobe Acrobat professional.

For some reason copy is available as an option as soon as you select text when using Kindle on the PC, available when using Kindle on the Mac and available when using Kindle on an Ipad. The only place it is NOT available is on android. It is not a legal issue its just an omission in the android version. Why? I have no idea, but I personally find it quite frustrating. Its actually the primary reason people like me buy our Bible reference books from Olive Tree or Logos and only resort to Kindle when there is no other option.

Amazon is losing a lot more money on this oversight than they realize. Ive spent over a thousand dollars on Olive Tree books, many of which were cheaper on Kindle because there is absolutely no way to look up verses except the old fashioned way (with a paper bible next to my tablet). You cant share pieces of text (except with the 2 or 3 resources they have selected).

The research-unfriendly criticism applies to all Kindle readers in many ways, but its worse with Android, because on Android you cant even copy the verses into something else to have another ap look them up. How about they at least open up the "dictionary" space to ap developers, how about anything to move beyond this crippled "all people do is read novels" mentality?!? For me its the difference between spending five minutes studying a page and spending 20. And I suspect similar frustrations with this limitation apply to people with other interests.

The fact that people have had to devise all the absurd workarounds that are mentioned in this thread proves the need.... Amazon, please allow us to share the text with outside apps, even if its just 50 or 60 characters.
