Syncing notes and marks across iPad / iPhone

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to make sure my notes and marks sync up when I switch between my iPhone and iPad.

When I switched to my iPhone on the weekend, I was happy to see my previous notes and marks from my use on the iPad during the week were present. However, now that I'm switching back over to my iPad, I do not see the notes and marks I made over the weekend on my iPhone.

Of course, I have tried hitting the sync icon, but that just seems to ask me if I want to go to the furthest read location (which happens to be near the end of the book, since I am reading a certification guide with answers at the back). I have even tried going to the furthest read location but this does not seem to trigger the syncing of my marks and notes. Annotations are backed up for both devices.

I tried searching some threads here and I followed the instructions but they did not seem to work. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I seem to remember having a similar issue, but don't recall the resolution...how about adding a note from the iPhone and seeing if that forces a sync?

Good idea, thanks. I added numerous highlights over the weekend on the iPhone and they are not showing up on the iPad, so I'm guessing those didn't force a sync. I also just now tried adding a new highlight on both devices, and again, nada. My weekend's highlighting is not on my iPad. Since I'm studying for a certification exam, the highlight syncing is pretty important for me...

I tried one other thing. I tried hitting sync on each device and then going to the farthest location. Then, I went further on the iPhone and hit sync (hoping this would also sync the notes and marks). The app just told me I'm at the farthest location on both devices. Then I hit sync on the iPad, and it said I'm at the farthest location on all devices (even though I'm not, since my iPhone is farther). I then went a few pages further on the iPad and hit sync again. I'm still no further along... I'm not sure how the Notes and Marks syncing works, but it does not feel very intuitive at this stage.

For what it's worth, I'm using Kindle on the iPad and iPhone and I'm experiencing the same issues. The "farthest location" works great, however the highlights made on the iPhone do not show up on the iPad, nor do the highlights made on the iPad appear on the iPhone.

I am no expert on the subject so I sure hope I don't misspeak...
From what I gather, to assure that everything you have done during a reading session (highlighting, notes, bookmarks, etc.) is capture and can be passed on to other devices, when you are done return to the home page and do a "sync". There is something about doing it from the home page and there is something about forcing the kindle or kindle app to sync. But don't quote me on it as I can't tell you the source.
PS this assumes that you have all of the syncing/sharing options turned on on every device.

I am also having the same issue. It syncs fine with my Android phone and Kindle reader on the laptop but the iPad doesn't have any of my bookmarks. Frustrating as i seem to spend 5 minutes each time figuring out where in the book I am.

Thanks everyone. I called Amazon about this and one of the things they suggested was to remove the book from the device, make sure the marks and notes are saved, and then disassociate the iPad from my kindle account. This worked, but it is clearly a more extreme workaround option that I would not want to entertain all the time...

However, I've been trying Lisa H's suggestion the past day or two and it seems to be pretty good. Thanks for that! The one thing that is tricky I found is if I delete highlights, sometimes they do not get deleted in the sync.

Thanks again.

I had the same issue. Just removing the book from my iPad, then restarting the Kindle app, and re-downloading the book did the trick and the highlights all showed up correctly.

I am having the same problem. I read the replies here. I am trying to sync between the iPhone and the iPad. The book on the iPHONE has about 10 highlights. Nothing I do will get them to show up in the iPAD. Even if I add a new highlight on iPad, the new highlight will show up in both places but the ten I made earlier just will NOT show up on the iPad. I tried all the tricks above. Even uninstalling and reinstalling the app on the iPad. Sigh.
EDITED TO ADD: Wow. This is a first. I just turned off my iphone and then turned it on about two minutes later. NOW when I go into the book that had about 10 highlights, they're GONE. I have never seen that before. I guess they'll NEVER sync to the iPad now. I've never had that happen before!

Just happened to me with my iPad! I had been reading a book on the Kindle app, had LOTS of notes and highlights, read some more on my Kindle, made some more highlights, went back to my iPad and ONLY the highlights I made on my Kindle were showing on the iPad!!! I lost a lot of important notes!

Delete the book from the Kindle app on the device not showing the highlights and redownload the book in the app. The highlights, etc. that you aren't seeing should show up. I'm seeing it trying to sync across iphone/ipad and the Kindle cloud reader. I expect it also happens on my Mac, but I haven't tried that recently.

Following your suggestion, if I close the book and sync on each device (Mac and Kindle Fire) all my notes and highlights sync up, not just furthest page read. Thanks!

Hello guys, I was having the same problem: notes and highlights done on my iPhone were not showing up on Kindle. As someone else suggested, I went to home in my iPhone and pressed sync, then did the same in my Kindle, also from home, and IT WORKED. Apparently when u sync from the book, it only syncs the page position. You need to sync from home for everything to work. Hope Anazon fixes this bug soon. Best wishes from Argentina! Alejo

Hello, I noticed the same thing, after syncing Kindle on my mac did not contain the notes and highlights made on my Iphone 5. Then, when I (stupidly) sync my Iphone to the mac, the extensive highlights and notes on my Iphone disappeared, as well. Now, I don't have highlights/notes on either device. Is there any way to recover the Iphone notes? I'm desperate!

never mind, found the answer. Per above, if, on both devices, you go home and sync with the book on the cloud, all of the changes (highlights and notes) will be on both devices. Good reading everyone.

This method - remove the book on the device that is NOT updated and re-download - does sound like a "kludge" but it's actually a pretty quick process. Thanks.
