I tried to delete a book from the Kindle Fire and it still stays on the device. Is there something I am not doing right.

JayBird says:
The icon should change and it should appear with an arrow pointing down superimposed over the icon. This means it's no longer on the device but is in your Kindle library in the Amazon cloud. You can't remove the icon from the Kindle. This is also true with apps that you've downloaded. Hopefully something they fix because there are some apps that I found useless and I never want to see them in my library again nor floating around on the Fire carosel taking up icon space.

Bufo Calvin says:
JayBird, you can remove books permanently at

If you do that, however, and you (or anybody else who is or might be on your account in the future) wants to read it again, you'd have to buy it again (if it was still available).

JayBird says:
Read my reply again. The origional question was removing from the device. As long as the book is in your library there is no way to remove the Icon on the Fire.

The icon stays. Even if you delete it from your library on for good.

This is the one thing about the fire that sucks--and needs Amazon to change with firmware soon: the home screen/upper shelf carousel is not a favorites cannot customize is a combination of your web surf history and your archived items (your Amazon purchases, whether on device or I cloud)...all those icons create clutter and privacy issues should you wish to share your Fire.

You can do some time-consuming deleting of icons for web pages/apps that show up on your carousel...but, all your content stays in plain view, with no ability to customize, organize, or create collections.

C. Scilley says:
You can clear out your web pages on the carousel, by going to web-settings-clear history. To clear apps from your carousel, go to settings-applications-filter by all apps- app manager-clear data. To clear video from the carousel, go to settings-more-applications-amazon video-clear data.

If you are looking in the books section, make sure you have "device" selected at the top.

C., doesn't the last one also remove the videos from the device? That's what the infobox indicates.

Chris, did you sync with Amazon after removing a book from

Settings (the gear) - Sync

To remove books from fire that have been delete, go to settings-applications-filter by all apps- kindle clear data.

The apps you download can be deleted from the device. You have to hold down on the app and a pop up menu will appear and you can delete the app from the device. I did that this morning.

I completely agree... my four year old downloaded one of those porn-for-women romance navel, which is quite embarrassing when I try to show off my new fire... And now I can't delete the Icon... Are you kidding me?

I figured out how to delete books from my home screen on the Fire. First, I deleted them from my online account on my laptop. Next, I reset the Fire to factory settings and re-registered it under my account. In effect, I wiped the Fire clean and rebooted it.
It's rather ridiculous that I had to go to these lengths to erase undesirable book icons from the home screen, but there you have it.

I have the opposite problem. I just purchased my kindle fire and was messing around with it, so I downloaded a free book then deleted it. My understanding was that it would remain in my library with an arrow pointing down, but it disappeared completely. When I then tried to download the book again it said it was already in my library but the only book in there is the oxford dictionary my kindle fire came with. What am i not understanding (besides everything about computers and especially this cloud business)? I was also surprised to see that the book appeared under both the Cloud and Device heading, as I was under the impression an item would only appear under the Device heading if I acquired it from anywhere other then the amazon store. Please help me.

it should be stored on the cloud, goto books then at the top there are two buttons one says cloud, one device, click on cloud and the book should be there for download back to the fire, unless it was a free lending book and you returned it.

A Flickner says:
I had troubles too getting a book off of my kindle. If after you delete it from your device, it still shows up you need to do a full shut down. Hold the power button until an option comes up that says to shut down or cancel. Hit shut down and wait a minute. When you turn it back on it should be gone. This should work if you went into the online manage or kindle section and deleted it there first.

Miller says:
That is not true. Removing it from does not remove it. Even if it no longer shows on "manage your kindle" you are still stuck with the icon on your kindle device. This is a HUGE bug Amazon needs to fix.

Miller says:
It's a bug in the Kindle Fire. I'm in the same boat, unable to remove several things from my Kindle. The actual content can be removed, but not the icon. So it still appears in the carousel. Amazon needs to fix this.

towncar says:
Is there a trick to deleting free samples of books you decided not to buy? I can't find any way on the Fire touchscreen.

And they don't show up in the Manage Your Kindle computer screen, apparently because there was no money transaction for that item.

I'm having the same issue as towncar. I downloaded a book sample. Liked it, so I purchased the book, and now I have two entries for one book, the sample, and the full book. Is there a way to delete book samples?
*edit: I need to read more carefully... to delete a sample book, and presumable other items... find the item on the home page carousel of your kindle, hold your finger on the Icon and a menu will appear, one of these options is delete. Note: this is a permanent delete. I haven't tried this with apps.

Edit: The books continue in the trash. Is not possible to delete for this:

"Amazon MP3s, Kindle books, Amazon Shorts and other digital items cannot be deleted from Your Media Library in case you want to re-download your purchases. "

iDRMRSR says:
I did this. I borrowed a book from my local library. It downloaded. I then went on the web and in MANAGE KINDLE, I returned the book. I then got a personal letter from Amazon telling me it was returned, and that any notations I made in the book would be kept at Amazon and re-instated if I ever borrowed or purchased that book in the future. I then deleted the book from MANAGE KINDLE. It disappeared from the carousel. came BACK an hour later!

So I have an icon for a book that is NOT LISTED ON MY ACCOUNT, with a down arrow for download. I push the arrow, and NOTHING HAPPENS. If I hold the icon, I get only the options ADD TO FAVORITES and DOWNLOAD. SILLY STUPID THING!

Let me remind you the icon was once gone from the carousel and something at Amazon made them send it back to me in a "ghostly" status.

I then pushed the power button and shut down the KF (not just turned it off temporarily but a full shut down). When I powered it back on, the icon happily was gone.

Moral of the story is, that SHUT DOWN apparently can clean up some of the junk on the carousel. Next time I'm bothered with expired stuff in the carousel, I'm going to try a full SHUT DOWN. This may be a helpful hint, until they get things fixed.
