Try a reset of your Kindle and make sure you have a wifi or 3G connection. Double check your Kindle is still registered to your account. Check your 'manage my Kindle" to make sure there isn't a problem with your account. If it looks like your books are still on your account, your Kindle is properly registered and a hard reset doesn't solve the problem then I would call the Kindle customer service number.

try and do a sync, if that doesnt help, scroll down to the bottom of this page and click help, then contact amazon

@ Susan

ok my books dissappeared too, but when i plug the kindle into the computer I can see that the documents folder is still in there with the books. I have tried the sync and I have gone to the archive sections and tried to sync with the K4pc, and I have reset and I've called customer service 3x, but it is showing 0 items and 0 archives and only 860 MB freespace left. They are replacing this kindle but I would like to see some of my collections to know what books were not bought on Amazon so I can back them up. I have almost 8000 books so to try and go through and sort out what belongs to Amazon would take too long. Theres probably 60 books that were bought elsewhere, and I can't tell the difference in the documents folder as someone suggested. I have many books that show up with blue icons that came from amazon. I need to find a way to get my content back on my home screen of my kindle touch. I have also tried moving books out of the document folder and hoping they would show up as individual items and they wont. And the touch will not allow me to create collections and the sort by collections is blacked out also. Not that there are any authors or titles to sort by either. Thank you

@Kelly--ouch! My best advice (other than going through it slowly/in several sittings) is to look for different 'extensions' (I don't know the real word here). Books from Amazon usually look like: "the-title.asw". Things I have purchased elsewhere look like "" "the-title.prc" or "the-title.pdf".

The other thing I did (and maybe you can do in the future) is whenever I downloaded something from not-Ammy I would put it on my desktop, do the 'transfer via usb' thing, then immediately drag the item into a desktop folder I keep. This way all my non-Ammy things are backed up on my computer in an easily found place.

Now I am more likely to use the 'send to Kindle' program and the item will also be backed up on my Amazon cloud and be in my archives. I still keep the back up folder as I don't always have wifi or even 3G access.

The last thing might help depending on how your collections are set up. When you first get your new Kindle DO NOT DEREGISTER YOUR OLD KINDLE and DO NOT GIVE YOUR NEW KINDLE YOUR OLD ONE'S NAME YET. Add whatever books you KNOW you want on the Kindle (8000 is a lot and may be slowing down your Kindle--it's a pretty simple device and with indexing/tagging the heavier memory use may be affecting it's behavior). The next thing you do is take advantage of 'add other devices's collections' in your archive. This is when you can add the collections from your old device (and hence the don't-change-the-names-or-deregister-yet issue). The books should self-sort into your collections at this point and if you have empty collections then you may have clues on which titles you are missing.

I'm sure you have a few hours of work ahead of you, but if you take it in smaller chunks it can be done....
