I've transferred some jpgs via the DSL link from my PC to the Kindle Fire. It looks like the pre-installed Gallery app is a photo viewer. Can't seem to get it to work. I see thumbnails but can't seem to blow them up or find a way of viewing a slideshow. Anyone have some success with this Gallery app?

Hello Larry the K,

To start using the Gallery app that came pre-installed on your Kindle Fire, tap the Gallery icon from the Apps screen, either from the Cloud or Device tab.

Once you've transferred content to your Kindle Fire or downloaded content using the Amazon Silk web browser, the content will be saved in your Gallery.

Viewing pictures

From the Gallery home screen, tap Pictures to view your images. Tap the Slideshow icon to start a slideshow of all pictures on your Kindle Fire. Use the magnifying glass icons or pinch to zoom in and out of an image.

Tap the Menu icon at the bottom of the screen for more options. Tap the Share icon to send an e-mail with the picture using the Amazon Email app. Tap the More icon to crop or rotate your image, and to view image details. Tap the Delete icon to delete the image.

Viewing downloads

From the Gallery home screen, tap Downloads to view images and videos you downloaded using the Amazon Silk web browser. Use the scroll bar to scroll through your files.

Tap the Menu icon at the bottom of the screen for more options. Tap the Share icon to send an e-mail with your downloaded file using the Amazon Email app. Tap the More icon to crop or rotate an image, or view more details. Tap the Delete icon to delete the file.

Gallery supports these file formats:

* Video Formats (MP4, VP8)
* Image Formats (JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP)

Hi Shannon,

How do you change the sorting of the items in the Kindle Fire Gallery App? I noticed that it is currently sorted Created Date/Time by default (I may be mistaken though). How do you sort it by the file name?

Thanks,
David

I open the gallery App but do not see any Cloud or device tabs. I have no idea how to download from the Cloud to the Fire.

Larry the K says:
If you hook up a USB cable between your PC and Fire, you can transfer photos by dragging and dropping to the photo folder on the Fire

I emailed some photos to my Kindle Fire and they appear in the docs but not the gallery. Any way to get them in the Gallery? I don't have cable yet; thought it came with kindle.

Paxton says:
Connect via USB, and from your computer drag them from the documents folder to the photo folder.

Larry the K says:
I bet there is an app that gives you the ability to view these folders directly without hooking up a PC. Let you know if I find one.

Yes...there's an app called File Manager which will permit you to view the Android file structure and manipulate files. Its available from the Fire App Store. There also appear to be several other alternatives.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I guess I'll have to break down and get a USB cable though. I thought the Fire came with a cable and no plug. Pretty slick marketing but I'm very happy with my kindle fire so I guess I'll just suck it up.

How do I view or download photos to the Gallery on the fire that I have uploaded to Amazon Cloud? I see an easy way to download music from the Cloud when using the Music App, but no similar feature for photos from the Cloud

Joseph,
If you have a Kindle 2, 3, or DX, you can use that cable. That's what I used to transfer my photos to the "pictures" gallery (or did it say 'photos'?) Anyway, it then shows up in the Gallery.

If you don't have the cable someone in another thread noticed that you can go to your manage your cloud section of Amazon on the browser and download directly from there.. just like anything else on line. Just hold your finger over the link and it'll save it to the gallery. You can do the same with your video files, etc.. but they will all reside in the Gallery. Good way to get 'er done until you get the right cable.

Is there any particular photo-file size and/or aspect ratio that works best for photos to be loaded onto the Fire to fill the viewing window? Or are all photos automatically resized? Thanks.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 21, 2011 8:27:07 AM PST
I've been resizing to the screen resolution of 1024x800 with good results in Gallery so far.

Posted on Nov 21, 2011 8:28:01 AM PST
Oops, I mean 1024x600.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 21, 2011 9:26:16 AM PST
Right - that's the resolution for the screen. And you fill it up that way without losing much.

For the old e-Ink ones, we're told to just do 800 height and 600 width.

And in the Kindle Fire, that higher resolution and the great contrast and color fidelity just has great results !

I put one there that I like, which I had processed only with
height=800 and width=600 and so it doesn't fill up the screen, but it still looks great on it.

In my Kindle books I've had good results with 622x470. They still look good on the Fire, even zoomed.

I went to Amazon silk, downloaded a picture (tapped and held it, then saved it), went to Gallery, and didn't see the downloaded picture. I completely shut down Kindle Fire, turned it back on, went to Gallery, then I saw the downloaded picture. Anyone experienced the same?

Also, what is up with the limited cloud support. You can only transfer music from Amazon's own Cloud Drive to the Kindle Fire, and not pictures and documents. If I go to Amazon Silk, log on to Cloud Drive, open up a picture and try to save it, it STILL won't let me save it (showing "download unsuccessful").

I'm ready to write a negative review of this thing: no non-English input, no e-ink screen, limited cloud support, no usb cable included.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 23, 2011 9:13:29 AM PST
If you open the cloud on your kindle browser and then go to the pic and hold the file you want to download, you will get the option to save it. I have found that to view it on the Kindle you have to get a file mgt app and open the download folder then rename the download as a jpg or what it is. Then you move it to the picture folder. Works for me. Pain in the neck but good till I get a good cable.

Posted on Nov 23, 2011 9:20:05 AM PST
If you receive a picture in email, how do you save it to your gallery on Fire? Tried all kinds of tapping, holding, etc, but it won't give me an option to save.

keviny01 says:
That was what I did. As I said, I couldn't see the downloaded picture in Gallery until I shut down Fire and turned it back on.

Also, couldn't download pictures from Cloud Drive on Silk, gave me "download unsuccessful" error. It's funny Kindle Fire can't work with Amazon's own Cloud Drive.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 23, 2011 9:31:07 AM PST
Holding the file name should give you the save option. Then see my other post

Why doesn't the gallery app display filenames of videos? Showing me a grid of icons isn't enough to tell which file is which. This makes it completely unusable for video files

i downloaded an advertisement in jpg format, and in the browser, i can zoom and the text is readable. after saving it on the fire, in the gallery app, everything stays blurry when i zoom. so it makes it bigger, but still blurry, which is useless. fix?
