Is there anyone else as amazed/disgusted as I am that Tom Cruise has been cast as Jack Reacher in an upcoming movie of "One Shot"?

As a long time Reacher fan, I cannot believe that they cast a 5 foot 6inch midget to play a 6 foot 5 inch giant!

Particularly when his size is such an integral part of every Reacher story.

I honestly can't believe it!

And where does Lee Child sit in this? Does he approve, or has money spoken and guaranteed his aquiescence?

I'm not sure but my best guess is that you didn't mean to post this in a forum to discuss Kindles ....

I stopped watching Tom Cruise movies a long time ago. He may be a good actor, I don't know. I just can't get past his weird factor.

There are several threads on this subject, so no, you are not the only one.

I think they somehow got the height numbers transposed. Tom Cruise could never portray Jack Reacher. I have read every book and I see none of Tom Cruise in any of them.

Based on his work in Person of Interest, my husband and I think Jim Caviezel would make a good Reacher if you bulk him up a bit.

Thanks for the link, sorry to be a year behind most others!

But pleased that the general concensus is negative.

Hollywood almost always screws up on movie adaptations of novels, IMMHO. Case in point: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1598828/

With the possible exceptions of Jason O'Mara and Debbie Reynolds, this movie was so badly cast that I can't bring myself to even think about watching it. Might be a "good" movie for anyone who isn't obsessed with the Plum series. (Caveat: I "was" obsessed for books 1-5 - some of the best light-hearted "mysteries" ever written. Started being bored with #6. Quit the whole thing in disgust with #15.)

I agree. It will be a long time before I can read another Reacher book and not picture Tom Cruise! Aargh...ruined the fun. What were people thinking? Tom Cruise? Really?

Mary McManus says:
The solution to being able to read future Reacher books is NOT to see the movie. Then you won't have Tom Cruise in your head.

Wrong. I've mentioned this before, but when I read Marley & Me I couldn't get Jennifer Anniston's face out of my mind. No, I hadn't seen the movie, but the previews were plastered all over the place.

Lee child regarding Tom Cruise as Reacher:

"The fact is Cruise is a great Jack Reacher. He really nails it... There are no subtle camera angles to make him look bigger... No concession to anything at all and it totally works. When people see this movie they're going to agree and then ask themselves, 'What was I making such a big fuss about for a year and a half?'"

"Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way."

R. D. Clark says:
Just because he writes entertaining books doesn't mean he can't choose to sell out and then try to rationalize it so he can still live with himself. Take that new book of Reacher excerpts, if further proof is needed.

I'm not arguing either side, just answering one of the OP's questions as to what Lee Child's reaction was.

T. Cannon says:
All respect to Mr Child because I love his Reacher books but...Nice Try. Reacher's size and all of his features are essential to the character because he can do certain things because of his size and how he looks, other people treat him the way they do because of his size and how he looks. There are too many examples of all of this in the books for it to be merely a metaphor for an unstoppable force.

I thought Tom Cruise has been a jack reacher for decades. He's been reaching for the biggest pile of jack that he can find since the mid-80's. Never mind the fact that the guy can't act worth a damn.

Nice. His only decent movies are filed under the Minority Report, and only if you read it with your eyes wide shut.

Hmm.. Tom Cruise is one of the Producers of a movie that Lee Child is not only getting licencing fees and royalties off of, but also a direct writing credit on. What else would his answer be?

I know what you mean with the casting of someone completely opposite of how the character is described and the pic in your head. They cast Mark Harmon to portray Lucas Davenport in the Prey series by John Sandford. HELLO, so not Lucas. I feel for ya with the casting of Tom Cruise...do people actually see his movies anymore? I mean when he is susposed to be the main draw?

Mary McManus says:
Do you know the titles of any of the Prey movies? I did not know they existed.

Stephen Vlam says:
My mother-in-law, who turned me on to the Reacher books, laughed out loud when I told her Cruise was the star. Now she cries. On the plus side, the story is one of the better books (the one that starts out with a sniper shooting up a town square), and Tom Cruise, for everything I don't like about him, is a fine action-film actor. I just can't hear Reacher speaking with that Tom Cruise voice though.
