My son received a new Kindle Fire HD for Christmas. For some reason it will not charge with the Amazon charger that came with it. We have tried plugging it into a different socket and it still will not work. We have shut it all the way down and tried to power it back on but the battery is so low it will not power back on. We have used another usb but that didn't work either. Does anyone know what we can do to get it to charge??

Do you have a cell phone charger that plugs into the wall? (must have the same micro usb port) if so, try that, or order the fast charger.

OK, I was having the same issue using the fast charge plug, that I paid extra for with my Kindle Fire HD. Just switched from the quick charge to a plug that came with my LG cell phone and now it IS charging. Come on Amazon, I paid extra and it doesn't work?

Contact Customer Support and request a replacement charger. Yours might be a dud; it happens. :)

is this where you do a "hard reset"?

i am having the same problem with KFHD8.9 and using the quick charger.

A 'hard reset' (reboot, some people call it) is a good thing to remember how to do. It clears up many glitches, just like restarting Windows does on a PC or laptop.

Unplug the charger cord from the Kindle.
Hold the on button for 30 seconds. (time or count it) Let go.
Now turn on normally (just a quick press)
Let it reboot; it takes a minute or two.

Not saying this will help with charging, but it can't hurt, and it clears up a lot of issues.

Well, I hope it works for you. I have the Kindle Fire 1st Generation, and sometimes, if my charging light doesn't come on, I'll do the "hard reset" and it always works. Good luck.

OH.. it is a good idea, too, before doing the "hard reset" to unplug from the charging cord. Replug in after the Kindle does its thing and reboots.

(I'll edit my post above, too)

This seems to be a major issue with the device. I have the same issue if mine runs out of juice, it will not charge. I always have to do a hard reboot (hold power button for 30 secs, release, then wait about 10 secs and press the power button on). I find this pretty ridiculous really and should be looked at by the designers. It is clearly a flaw You shouldn't have to go through the reboot process to get the device to charge.

I have a Kindle Fire (not HD) that is about a year old and I am having problems with charging as well. I have rebooted and tried different cords and converters. I've come to believe that all USB micro cables are not the same--I've put a couple aside that don't seem to work. Also, I've just read that the wall charger must be adequate (2.1 Amps)--If not, it can even start a fire.

Now I've sent for an Amazonbasics cable and converter and hope they work. A rapid charger would be the next thing I'd try, but I see not all of you have had luck with that--so if the new cable and converter have problems I'll contact support. Happy I saw the topic!

Why doesn't a proper charger come with the device! Ridiculous.

Sorry to say this just happened to my kindle HD...glad these postings were here!!!!!! Poor operating system design if you have to do this to charge it...I thought at first I messed up the plug in but could not figure out how that would have happened...

I had to do a hard reset as well. I thought it wasn't charging but after the hard reset it turned on normally and it was 100% charged.

I am having similar problem were the unit charges only at certain times, I did buy the charger and cable from Amazon and I get the same issue, what its really bad is that the charger/cable from Amazon will not work on my blackberry, it says that the charge is to low for charging blackberry, I wonder if Amazon sold both the unit and charger that are defective

I had the same problem with my new fire hd. At first it would only charge with some cables, and never the one it came with. It got progressivly worse and finally nothing would charge it. Amazon replaced it with no hassle, just return the dead one.
