If I can play Words with Friends (not Scrabble) and use it as an alarm clock, then I want to buy it. If not, I think I'm going with a tablet.

Go with a tablet; Kindles are not social media platforms; they are basically for reading.

I just want something that I can read from (textbooks are too heavy), can play Words with Friends on (I'm completely addicted), and can keep near my bed as an alarm clock. I'd give up the alarm clock feature if I could just get Words with Friends. Thanks for the input though. It looks like I'll have to buy a tablet... :)

From what I read, that is an iPhone application. The Kindle isn't made for running those types of aps. It is first and foremost an ereader. For reading.

If you are considering one for textbooks, make sure they are available for Kindle. Many math or science books don't render well on a Kindle. For reading literature, it's great, but not for all textbooks.

Words with Friends is currently available on Apple (iPod, iPad) and Android devices. Given the limited communications capability of the Kindle, it's unlikely that you will see it on any of the current-generation devices. I'm also not aware of any Alarm Clock app currently available, and am not sure whether any apps can run while the Kindle is in sleep mode. It really doesn't sound like a Kindle is going to fit your needs - you should look at the iPad or the various Android tablets. Or get yourself a Kindle for reading and an Android phone or iPhone for the other things you want.

We use an old cell phone for my husband's alarm, and I use mine for myself. We've told our families that if they need to reach us at night, my cell phone is always on my bedstand. In the past, we've shut off our land line phone in our bedroom and forgotten to turn it back on. So, I keep my cell with me at all times.

We thought about using a clock radio, but neither of us wants that blue or red light shining in the middle of the night.

Seriously? It's an Ereader. If you want to play games and have an alarm clock buy a tablet and be done with it. The Kindle is for reading.

The kindle is for reading books, newspapers, blogs
You can play some games on the kindle.

Use your cell phone as your alarm clock.

A Kindle is a e-reader. It's not a tablet, netbook, or iPod Touch/iPad. I don't know why so many people don't understand that.

You can get Scrabble and Monopoly for the Kindle (the regular Kindle, not the fire). That said, it's not that far off to wonder if they might have Words with Friends also. It's basically the same game.

If I am playing Words with Friends on my iphone can I access that same game from the Kindle?

That was my first thought. Your cell phone probably has the capability to do multiple alarms for you. Asking the Kindle to wake you up is like asking the coffeemaker to scramble you some eggs.

I'm sure your cell phone has one of those, too. Most do.

I've been playing Word's With Friends on my Kindle Fire. It works very well. I can see it a lot better than on my phone or iPod. As for an alarm clock I haven't tried that.

but can you access a game you started on iphone? It won't let me in using my account info from the phone

The available maxium volume on the Fire is not loud enough to wake you with an alarm clock app. I wanted to stop using my phone, and just set an alarm when I quit reading. the first time I used it, didn't set a back up, and the tiny little noise did not wake me. I checked several other options for wake up sound, and none of them come thru the speakers loud enough to wake. I was really disappointed, but my phone is great, so we will just stay with it for wake ups.

I just want to know how to change the time on the Kindle Touch clock. Does anyone have a clue? I have read the User Guide but can't find anything that refers to the clock.
