back up older magazines

Second try to get an answer to this - is there any way to back up older issues of magazines to a computer or other device? I've read that Amazon will only retain the last 7 months of subscribed mags, but there are a few magazines I'd like to retain for longer than that. If I could back them up to my desktop or laptop computer, I could at least restore them to the KFHD when I want to read them -- or would that not work either?

If there's no way to retain older magazines, it would be good just to know that.

Follow up on this - though it looks like there's no interest in it anyway - second email to Kindle Customer Service brought another form letter which had nothing to do with the question I asked (which was whether it was possible to back up an issue of a magazine, from the Kindle Fire HD to a desktop computer). Followed this up with a phone call to Kindle CS - spoke to two different reps. The second rep, a "senior resource", thought it was easily possible to make the transfer or copy in question - but she was very confused about how to proceed. After about 20 minutes on the phone, we decided to end that conversation. I guess I'm the only one who's ever asked this question (though I thought I'd read some threads about it) and there's no current interest in retaining copies of sucscribed magazines past the 7 months period.

okay, maybe I'm being really, really stupid here, but cant you do so via the USB cord and transfer the magazine to the Kindle for PC application? Or don't magazines work that way?

Another thought I had, was if the magazine was in your Cloud, then couldn't you simply download it to the Kindle app on your computer?

I don't have any magazines on my KF HD yet, so I'm not sure how they work - if they're like books or a totally different format.

Why couldn't you just use Calibre to back them up to its library? Of course the files could only be read on the original device to which they had been downloaded. That argues for ensuring one copy at least should be downloaded from Amazon to awell cared for computer.

Hi Jennifer - Yes, of course that's one of the first things I tried. Maybe my Fire is the only one like this, but when I connect it to a computer (by USB)and examine the internal memory of the Fire, the magazines on my Fire don't show up anywhere. Movies and videos which are loaded on the fire don't show up- those folders are labelled as being empty. So those things which are on the Fire, but which can't be seen on the computer, can't be transferred or copied.

Magazines are kept in the Cloud only for 7 months. At the 7 month time limit, they're removed from the Cloud, and I understand they're also removed from the Kindle at that time.

Thanks for your reply. It´s good to know that someone noticed my question.

You can download them from Manage Your Kindle. They would be keyed to only work on the device you select, but you would have the file on your computer.

Bill - If you select to 'Keep' your magazines they will stay on your device indefinitely. I have some that are over two years old on mine.

I also back them up onto my PC using a USB cable. I have a folder for them. They will only work on that specific Kindle, but if I ever have to reset it to factory defaults I can restore them.

In reply to an earlier post on Feb 20, 2013 4:33:00 PM PST
True. That would work, too.

Jennifer - You can't download magazines to Kindle for PC.

I've never seen a "Keep" menu item. Granted, my magazine subscription isn't that old yet. Maybe the item appears after 6 months or so?

You have to "touch and hold" to see that selection.

Susan - No, the instant mine download I keep them. Long press on it and select Keep this Issue.

Meya and Pineapple ( and others who have replied) - Thanks for these tips. I'm another one who has not seen an option to "keep". I did try "touch and hold", in the Library on my Kindle, by touching the thumbnail image of the magazine's cover, as I was instructed to do by the customer servie rep - but in my case that did nothing at all. Maybe I touched and held the wrong thing?

I've also tried to back up by connecting the KFHD to a computer by USB (see one of my first posts to this thread), but the magazines don't show up on the computer, so I'm stuck there. To be specific - Kindle connected to computer via USB - Kindle shows up as an external drive - examine "internal storage" of the Kindle while looking at the "Computer" folder of the laptop or desktop computer - open up various folders of the Kindle's internal storage - and I don't see my magazines anywhere. Also, the Movies folder says it's "empty", although I have one movie and a few episodes of TV shows on the KFHD. Books show up, but in a proprietary format which looks something like "B0000CD7REX943z" for each book. I'm guessing that those book files could be dragged back onto the Kindle and then they could be read there - but of course I'd never bother to do that, because books are retained as long as I like. Please let me know where I've gone wrong with these things. Thanks -

I'd better add that the Manage Your Kindle on the Amazon website also acts strangely. I subscribe to National Geographic maggazine and Time magazine, and I'm receiving issues regularly, but on the Amazon site I get the message "there are no magazine subscriptions" (or equivalent of thos words). It's the same for Newspapers. I subscribe to the New York Times, CNN, USA Today - but when I look for them in Manage Your Kindle, I get "no newspapers" message. That's odd, but it's not causing me any trouble so far, so I'll ignore it for now.

Meya says:
To download them to your computer, you need to go to Manage Your Kindle, here on the site. Click "Magazines" over on the left, then in the Actions drop down menu, select Download & transfer past issue via USB. You will also select the device that you want to read that magazine on...only compatible devices will be listed in BOLD in the Deliver To menu. You will also need to select the issue that you want to download. Each one is done separately.

That issue will then download to your computer. Mine go to the Downloads folder.

To "KEEP" the magazine, on the Fire, tap Newstand, then the Magazine. You'll then see all the issues that you have access to so far. If it isn't downloaded to the Fire, you won't get the KEEP option. If it is downloaded, you'll see a checkmark on it. Touch and Hold, you'll see Add to Favorites, Remove from Device, and Keep.

Meya - Thanks for your reply. Just now, I tried the Manage Your Kindle/Magazines route again, but once again I only get the message "No Magazines Found" even though I subscribe to Time and National Geographic, and I get issues regularly. So that path isn't going to work for me. I'm glad to works for others.

When I go through the Newstand/Magazine path on the KFHD, I see only one issue of each magazine, usually the first issue which arrived, not the most recent one. If I tap the thumbnail of the mag's cover, I am taken back to the magazine's sales place (is this part of the Kindle app for that magazine?), where there are several issues shown, some of which are on the Kindle and some of which aren't. For the issues I have, there's a choice of Download or View, but no choice to Keep. Tapping "View" for a short time brings up the issue of the magazine. It doesn't bring up a choice to "Keep" the issue. Tapping the thumbnail for a longer time doesn't do anything. Probably I'm tapping the wrong thing, or doing it incorrectly. Any suggestions will help.

"For the issues I have, there's a choice of Download or View, but no choice to Keep. "

Right. You are going to want to choose "Download". Then the issue will download to your device. On the top of the Books section of your Kindle you will see the word"Device". Choose that and then long press on the issue you downloaded. You will see the option to keep the issue. Choose that.

The downloaded magazine files go into the /sdcard/Books/ directory on my 1st gen Fire. They comprise two files: a prc and a mbp. They have the usual alpha numerical file names but seem to have _MAGZ. as the last characters

I have a K1. I can't touch and hold. How do I see the Keep option? If I click on the magazine, it just opens it.

Michelle - The original question was how to Keep (retain) issues of magazines which are more than 7 months old, since Amazon's policy is to remove those magazines from the Kindle after 7 months. Magazines can't be re-downloaded after 7 months' time. To retain magazines, I'd have to copy them, or move them, to another device. So far, that seems to be impossible on my Kindle Fire HD - though I know others have been able to do it.

The Time and National Geographic Magazines are apps. My app magazines will allow me to archive them within the app, so I can redownload when I want to re-read them. Doesn't the Time and National Geographic work the same way?

Becky - I didn't know about that. I´ll see if those apps offer that option.
