M. Fridman says:
I have a weird issue with my new kindle fire hdx 7". The long edges of the screen show a light purple fringe, most noticeable on white pages but there on grey also. Amazon is going to send me a new one.

ETA: Received the replacement unit on 10/22. 2nd unit has exactly the same blue glow / light bleed around the edges. I am assuming this is "normal" and keeping my first one.

ETA: Chatted with "Suchet" from Amazon CS today. Interesting news:
Suchet: We're working on an update which will be launched soon, wherein you'll be allowed to switch on/off this light.

Sounds like a software fix is on the way.

This may simply be a mismatch between the panel and the glass. When you deal with light, it only takes a tiny, tiny millimetric imprecision to see the intense panel lighting / edge reflection. Its unfortunate that you received one, but I would also suggest you think about scale. Defect rates in the electronics industry are low, something in the handful-of-percent range. Even a 1% defect rate across a million devices means that thousands of devices will be returned as defective.

Glad Amazon seems to be making it right for you.

M. Fridman says:
I assure you, I got my Kindle 7" HDX on October 12, one week earlier than the estimated delivery date. And Amazon is shipping me a 2nd one, estimated to arrive October 30.

M. Fridman says:
Amazon customer service is always excellent, and I can keep using my HDX until the new one comes. I mostly posted this to see if this was just me, or a bad batch.

M. Fridman says:
I found one online review that mentions the purple (blue) edges: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2425068,00.asp
And you can sort of see it here in this photo: http://asset0.cbsistatic.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/10/01/Amazon_Kindle_Fire_HDX_7_35828167-9775_610x407.jpg

I hope it is an early manufacturing defect, and not how all of them will be... once I noticed the blue edges, I can't stop seeing them!

Just got mine, very noticeable purple fringe around the edge (HDX 7" 32gb). Only see it on white/light colored screens but very distracting. Is this a flaw or does every Fire HDX do this? Only notice one review so far mentions it.

I checked out another review. This reviewer didn't mention it nor did I see it in his video. http://youtu.be/Ez_QjwwhVxQ
At 4:38, he has a webpage open which is white and I didn't see any issues. It may be a defect? Thank goodness Amazon has great customer service.

Dane Brooks says:
When they crank out screens like this there is bound be some with defects. You probably got one... My first First Gen Kindle Fire had a dead pixle in the center of the screen. Amazon had my replacement to me with in a day or two.

Lee Abraham says:
Maybe Dane, I would just like confirmation from someone who doesn't see it before I contact Amazon. At least one commercial review mentions it, as well as one user review. Is it a flaw or common?

S. Wong says:
It appears to be a common issue... I found this article: http://kfhdx.com/kindle-fire-hdx-blue-glow-around-screen/

Thanks S. Wong. Guess I will get to try out mayday.

I received my 7" Kindle Fire HDX a few days ago, and I see exactly the same thing M. Fridman describes, even on the short edges. Also, has anyone else noticed a slight screen flicker shortly after the screen content changes?

I have the same issue. Amazon is replacing it with another unit. It will be interesting to see if it has the same issue

Dom says:
Same issue here. I actually took it back to Best Buy first. We opened up three units at Best Buy to examine them and they all had the same blue/purple glow around the edges. Could this be some sort of light leak, or possibly that the LCD is fastened too tight? Either way after the other Best Buy units, I decided to call Amazon. They are sending out a replacement and insist that they will continue to replace it until the issue has been resolved. I was told by a MayDay support tech that this is now a known issue. I'm guessing they will get right on correcting the manufacturing process to avoid this issue in the future.

Here's a video I found on the issue: http://youtu.be/3yR8k5NEmRA

I have the same issue, and I called the May Day person this morning. He told me that all their units have the same issue, and it's an optical effect, not hardware defect. So, I'm not sure a new unit will help. I'll keep this for a few days, and if it doesn't go away, then I will return it to Bestbuy.

Lee Abraham says:
Interesting. If this is normal, I will not be keeping it. Owned several tablets and phones over the years and none have had anything more than some very minor light bleeding. Of course if this was a defect caused during manufacturing that was missed, this could be a huge problem for Amazon, and they will need to go into damage control. Still, very surprised more reviews don't mention this. On mine I find is very distracting. Maybe I am overly critical?

Posted on Oct 19, 2013 6:51:34 AM PDT
I only see this in the white background, not on any other background. I've had owned many smartphones, tablets, and laptops, but I have never had this issue in the past. So, I'm not sure who is telling the "truth." The Kindle PaperWhite had the same issue about shadows at the bottom of the screen, and they never went away until they released the new version a month ago.

J. Gatie says:
That's funny, because the Mayday person I talked to is sending me a new unit. He said it is a known issue with some HDX's and they are happy to replace it.

B. Berard says:
I have it too, but it is just on one side of the screen so it can't be an optical effect in the software because it stays on that side of the screen no matter what application/orientation.

I just got back from BestBuy. I have checked 2 other units, and they all had the same issue. The tech person there said they were told this is the way it is for the new Kindle. One thing I observed was that there was variations on the "intensity" of this purple hue. My original one was rather dark whereas other ones were light. So, they exchanged mine with a new one. The new one has the hue, but it is not as intense as my original one. I will use it for a little bit to see if I get used to it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting Kenneth. That seems to be very strange in this day and age, they must have really tried to cut corners on costs. Understandable, but I would rather pay more and not have the issue. Amazon's tech support seems to be still trying to figure out what the company' stance is on this.

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 19, 2013 10:09:58 AM PDT
Kenneth - That CS rep was incorrect. We have two 7" HDX models in my house. Once has the dreaded blue haze and the other has just the smallest hint of a blue edge (I mean really, really small). I have also talked with other Pros who just got their HDX models who do NOT have the issue. Amazon is aware of the issue, and I think they are scrambling to make things right. I would contact CS again or return it and try another one.

I was told by an Amazon rep through May day that this is normal and due to the new led tech they use for the hex.
