Are there any plans on implementing collections on the Kindle Fire? It would be nice to be able to organize all of my books on my Fire like I did my original Kindle. Thanks!

Yes Collections is available for the Kindle Fire.
I suggest doing a search for Collections in the Kindle APP store.

There are two apps for purchase in app store for $2.99. Go to App store and type the word "collections" and both should come up for your perusal. I have downloaded the first one (oldest) COLLECTIONS FOR KINDLE FIRE and reviewed. It is okay and much better than nothing. Developers responded personally when I pointed out issues and discrepancies with first version and fixed most issues. I gave it high stars for this reason and that I finally had SOMETHING as opposed to nothing to sorta manage my eShelves.
A new app called COLLECTIONS AND CATAGORIES has recently emerged. I haven't any experience with this one and reviews are lacklustre with both apps.

If I use an App to manage this, would I have to go to Apps on the Kindle, or does it replace the menu underneath Books?

Tim, I suggest you read the reviews. The programers are working on some of the issues. The deal-breaker for me is the lack of syncing (at the moment).

I downloaded the Collections version on my 1st gen. You open the app and import your books, then set catagories one book at a time. Then, to read, you opened the app, found the book you want and tap it to load. All handled from the app. The normal book function on the 1st gen remained the same, and usable without the app. The problem is the app and the kindle don't talk to each other (yet).

I'm waiting for Amazon to intergrate a collections/folder/whatever into the device itself to avoid some of the issues with using an app. For now, I use off-site PC programs (shelfari for one) when I want to look around and find a new read. A pain, for sure, but so far better than what the apps are providing, imho.

Timothy,

It's a workaround (and not an optimal solution) but if you have a second generation KF that includes Kindle FreeTime, you can use that app to create up to six categories of books simply by assigning a "user profile" to a particular category, e.g. "Mysteries," "Unread," etc rather than "Johnny," "Mary," etc. Then enable the books (and videos for that matter) for a particular "user." You'll only see the books you've enabled when you login as "Mysteries".

What could possibly be taking so long for them to add this for the Kindle Fire? It is SO FRUSTRATING! Seems like such a basic thing. When I had five or ten books, it didn't bother me. Now that I have hundreds of books, and share an account with my husband and two children, this is extremely irritating.

I tried the Collections app last month, but it would not let me open any books, just the Edit menu. I got a refund. I e-mailed amazon.com that I wanted the ability to create collections on my Fire HD. They sent me a credit for a free copy of Collections. I tried it again, & I was able to open books. Last night, I ran it & received a message, "You do not own this app. Would you like more information?" I chose more information & got a spinning circle icon on my screen that went on & on until I turned off my Fire. I removed Collections & downloaded it again from Manage Your Kindle. Then, it worked, but my collections & all of the books I'd sorted into them were gone. I wish that app makers would post a notice when they have updated to a new version. I should think it easier for amazon techs to devise collections for the Fire than for us to wrangle with inept apps.

The majority of my ebooks I did not get from amazon, so the "cloud" is of limited value to me for storing books.

Laine, This is no longer true. With the Send to Kindle feature you can send any document on your computer to your Kindle Cloud for storage and downloading to devices on your account.

I have used for my documents and books purchased from other sites, it works great.

Send to Kindle is a convenient way to send content from the web or personal documents from your computer to your Kindle devices and Kindle reading apps. Your last page read along with bookmarks, notes and highlights are automatically synchronized across your Kindle devices and Kindle reading apps.

I use Calibre for sending ebooks on my computer to my Kindles. Perhaps, there is some advantage to using Send to Kindle of which I am unaware.

So let me make sure I am understanding this correctly. There is currently *no way* to organize the content of a Kindle Fire into collections, categories, folders, etc. without purchasing an app that may or may not work, and in any event adds an additional layer to accessing items?

That boggles the mind. I can organize my iPhone by moving things in and out of folders, why can't I organize books and documents on a Kindle Fire?

I sure hope I am missing something and that it is possible. Any expert comments?

Bixillarla says:
You are not missing anything. There is no way to organize your books into collections on the Fire. The Fire is a tablet that is using the Kindle for Android app which does not have this feature.

People have been complaining about this since the 1st generation Fire.

This is so sad and frustrating at the same time. I have a lot of books that I don't even have on my first generation Kindle Fire because there is no possible to sort them. It's to the point where I will not want my kindle anymore, for reading is the main function I have for it. So disappointing.

Thanks Bixillarla. It's a big disappointment. I chose Fire over an iPad because I *do* read a lot and loved my previous Kindle. Since one can organize on the "Kindle" line (apparently on all but Fires), and on any device that syncs with iTunes, it never occurred to me that such a basic function would be missing.

LJA says:
@ Miet, I disagree, I chose my Fire over the e-ink models because of the fragile nature of a e-ink reader. Probably 99.9% of my time with my Fire is reading time. If I wanted something for internet or games I'd get a much larger unit.

I have the Collections app for the Kindle Fire and I love it. However, for the past 2 days it will not pick up my new purchases when it "scans"...any suggestions?

Is there any new info on the Collections for the Kindle Fire (1st generation)? I would love to be able to sort! Have one of the two mentioned apps been improved further? Or is there a better one?
