it would be nice if they were MORE targeted to me. I find it crazy that with all the information they collect, they can't do this. I've purchased more than than a few gadgets through Amazon but get ads for a car, a credit card and a GPS unit, and that's it. I've only had the Fire for a few days so somebody please tell me that the ad experience gets more varied as you use it

I realize that Amazon may not (or may, I haven't really paid that much attention) have promised targeted advertising to individual customers/buyers of its Special Offer devices, but it makes no sense for Amazon to offer SO devices with ads on them, ads that should be helping to be subsidize the cost of the devices, if those ads aren't specifically targeted to the users of those devices in question. As the OP pointed out, Amazon has all of our buying habits in its database. There's no reason Amazon can't (always) target each of its individual customers with unique advertisements on their SO Kindles. I get targeted emails from Amazon all the time based on my viewing, buying, and other of my online habits on Amazon's website. Not utilizing those abilities on its Special Offer devices to the fullest extent possible is a complete waste on Amazon's part IMO.

There is something to what you say but I think there's more to this equation. The one big demographic is readers yet Amazon's hands had been tied as far as "offers" or promotional prices on big six e-books. Ultimately, if the e-book deals they can offer aren't making a difference to e-book buyers; why not sell some ad space to AT&T or L'oreal? As a consumer, and specifically a reader, personally, I don't see those as being "offers" at all, nor do I see anything "special" about prices available to literally everyone, but I don't see them as being any worse to look at for a nano-second than, say, old Emily.

I did. I missed her so much, I sent my KSO back and bought a no-ad KK. This was September 2011 - just a month or so before it was possible to unsubscribe from SOs through MYK.

Okay, maybe it was less missing Emily and more annoyed to no end by the stewpit ad, but I was relieved to see Emily rather than the ads.
