GPS is available on the 4G chip on the 8.9" Kindle Fire HD. How it will be supported by apps is unknown at this time.

Posted on Oct 20, 2012 8:13:05 AM PDT
Only the 8.9" HD display, 16 or 32GB with Wi-Fi, 32GB or 64GB with 4G LTE Wireless (Previous Generation - 2nd) includes a GPS chip. No word yet on compatible apps for it. The other Fire HD models only have WiFi-based location services, which cannot be used for driving directions.

Thank you for the quick answers! I'm trying to make up my mind on which tablet to get. and GPS is a good capability.

John D. says:
A GPS chip does not guarantee GPS capability. If there is no GPS antenna, it will never be possible for an app to use it.

True. But given that Amazon advertises the 4G Kindle Fire HD as providing location-based services via assisted GPS, we can presume they've equipped it with a functioning GPS antenna to go with the GPS chip.

What app was that? The ones I know of with the sort of functionality you're describing all require a rear-facing camera, so the app can "see" the sky. That won't work with a Fire HD.

Mrs. Alice:

Try SkEye (ver6.0.1) Found it free in the Apps for Android. When you start it up, it notifies you 'looking for satellites', then 'located 6 satellites', then moves as you move the screen. Don't know if this actively indicates it's employing the GPS, but found it to be pretty accurate.

the night sky app worked when I 1st downloaded it and it only since I downloaded the information pack for it that it failed to work

Does anyone know if the GPS on the 8.9" HD 4G works with a map app, like side loaded Google Maps or Google Earth? Thank you.

R. D. Clark says:
Maybe you should take this up with the app developer. The contact info should be within the app, or on its page in the app store.

I have contacted Amazon and they have referred me to candid who designed the night sky

hope they can help

The good news is that the Kindle Fire HD 7" does have a GPS chip.
The bad news is that it looks like Amazon disabled it.
Second bad news is that XDA doesn't look like anyone has found any luck turning it on. They can detect it with software, but at the time unable to remove the block that Amazon put in.

Only the KF 8.9 has GPS capabilities automatically enabled out of the box.

Only the 8.9 with 4g will work with gps. The 8.9 that only has wi-fi will not work with gps.
I have the 8.9 with 4g and the gps works perfectly with the mapquest app...same as any car gps with verbal directions and all.

Why can't you use Wi-Fi for driving directions?

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 4, 2013 8:17:23 AM PDT
How would you lock onto a wi-fi signal when you're *moving*? Yes, you could stop at a McDonald's and GET driving directions, but I think the point was that the Fire can't "follow" you and give turn-by-turn instructions.

If you install CoPilot GPS you can download maps of all North America to your device. Then GPS will work just fine "offline".

Does anyone know how to turn the GPS "ON" in the Kindle Fire HD 8.9? Also does anyone know how to get google sky map to download on the Kindle Fire HD?

In reply to an earlier post on Aug 6, 2013 4:33:04 AM PDT

My location services on my Kindle Fire HD says that it uses gps, but I doubt it. How do I tell? The kindle was a gift.

That's pretty bad when they deliberately disable a feature a device otherwise has. I bought the 7" Fire HD last Christmas for my wife and knowing what you've indicated here this will be my LAST amazon supported product I'll ever buy.

Now we know . . .
