Don't know what a Kindle GS is, but on my Kindle Keyboard 3, that would mean the Voice Guide feature got activated somehow. Go to the Home Page, then Menu, then Settings, then look for Voice Guide ( on 2nd or 3rd page of Settings), then see if it needs to be turned off.

I still want to know what a Kindle GS might be. I'm guessing a Kindle Fire. Shame makes people to weird things.

Thank you. The directions under experimental are wrong. I got kicked out of the quiet car this morning. My Kindle sound turned on by itself, and I did not know how to turn it off.

❤ Ann says:
The directions under Experimental are for text-to-speech within a book. Voice guide is a different feature, unrelated to TTS.

Ah, it was the voice guide! Thank you! I had the annoying problem of Kindle reading everything for me, and at last I have peace.

Thank you so much for this - it's been driving me insane trying to turn it off! Now have a lovely quiet Kindle again.

Thanks for this ... I somehow had 'keyed' in the turn on voice by touching a series of keys when picking my kindle up off the couch... It's been driving me insane trying to find out how to do it.. In trying to follow some directions.. I went from just the basic title, page, percent announcement to reading the book... luckily, I knew which keys I had pressed.. and could stop that.. I freqently am reading while my hubby is watching tv...

@dumb game: How have you tried to open the Settings menu using the little wheel icon at the top right of the Home screen? If you do not have that icon, then try swiping downwards from the top of the Home screen.

I am having the same problem with voice guide turned on. I can't swipe down the menu because the voice thing just reads everything on it when i try to swipe. I don't know if i have the wheel icon but if so i have tried pushing it as well. Any thoughts?

Denis Powell says:
The Voice Guide is on the Keyboard Kindle only and that doesn't have a touch screen. What device do you have?

If you have a Fire, do you mean Text To Speech within a book?

Did u ever figure it out bc i am having the same problem??

In reply to an earlier post on May 17, 2013 1:28:20 PM PDT
You're wrong, Denis:

Using Accessibility Features

Kindle Fire HD 7" has the following accessibility features:

Text-to-Speech reads your books aloud in a female voice, speaking U.S. English. For more information, see Text-to-Speech.
Voice Guide reads aloud details about the selections you make onscreen (for example, the title and summary of a book).

All current Fires have it.

I'm not trying to discount anyone who is trying to help but I don't think the people who are trying to help are realizing that you can't get to the settings easily with voice guide activated. Here is what I did:
Double tap the black "header" or "banner" at the top of the screen. Upon the 2nd tap, hold your finger there and then pull down. Double tap "More" on the right at the top. Then double tap "Accessibility", then double tap "Voice Guide" option for off. And there it is. Simple!
