I received my Kindle 8.9 today. I'm in Afghanistan (deployed), but my Kindle was sent to me registered already. Well, when I try to register the actual device, I get a message saying that it can't connect, to check my wifi status (I can browse on it) and to ensure my time and date are correct. I know how to change the time zone, but that doesn't change the fact that my Kindle is saying it is January 4, 1970. I spent over 5 hours on the customer service chat with several reps and they were completely, hands down, the worst customer service I have EVER experienced. Basically what it boiled down to was "try again". Finally, the last person I talked to said it can't be registered outside of the US... But ironically, another guy in my platoon received the 7 inch HD today straight from amazon and he got his working. Any ideas?

Also, the time and date are grayed out, so no, I can't click it and change them. The service reps said they will sync automatically when I register...

Is the other guy using the same wifi you are trying to access?

That sucks! I have no idea how to get it registered from outside the U.S. but you might try sending it to someone whom you really trust in CONUS, have them register it for you and ship it back.

Did you buy yours straight from Amazon on your own Amazon account or was it a gift. I'm assuming your buddy's was purchased on his own Amazon account.

If it came already registered, why are you trying to register it again?

If it's because it was registered to a different account than your own, make sure that the country code for the account you're trying to register it to is not set for Afghanistan, because Amazon can't provide Kindles or Kindle content to Afghanistan. Your country code should be the same as your credit card's billing address.

yeah - that was my question too.... you said it was already registered - to who ?

Because of various tehnology export restrictions, along with international copyright limitations, if Amazon detects the unit is outside the USA, you will have probs...

BUT - if it was already registered - still don't know why the re-register -
everything should have been ok.... just like an international traveller...

Amazon will detect where the WiFi connection is located and determine the physical locale via that IP address. However, if some local WiFi is being carried via some USA provider, or via a VPN tunnel back home to the USA, then that hotspot "might" appear
to be domestic and Amazon would think the device is connected back in the USA.
