My 7 year old asked for a Kindle. First question, is it a good idea to get her one? Secondly, which one should I get?

Sarida says:
Which Kindle? If it is the Fire, will you be sitting with her every moment she uses it? How long each day will she be permitted to use it? How careful is she with her possessions?

If it is an ereader, I would suggest the Basic. It's really great!

Have you seen the Nabis?

What does she want it for? Reading or playing games & watching videos?
For reading, the $69 Basic Kindle with a good cover would be a great choice.
If she is wanting to play games and watch videos you need to look at one of the Fires.

How much does she read? Are you constantly driving her to the library and/or bookstore?

Or are we talking, "You can play Angry Birds on the Fire!"?

She wants to read and listen to music. She wants me to upgrade her ipod, but said if she had a tablet she could just put music and books on it. I'm sure she will want to play games as well. She takes pretty good care of her things, that's why i'm even considering it...

I just sold my Kindle Fire (first generation) via Craigslist. It is a Christmas present for a 7 year old girl. They said she takes very good care of her belongings. I imagine she will play games on it. I hope she enjoys it as much as I am enjoying my new KF - HD.

She will read before she turns on the TV. She has a large book collection. She also loves music and Angry Birds, lol...

Then it sounds like you need to look at the Fires. I am not real familiar with them but you probably want the one that has "FreeTime" - that is parental controls.

Also, look into a good sturdy case, extended warranty to cover accidents, and ground rules about when it can leave the house. Don't want it getting lost away from home.

Yeah, the Fire might be fun, then!

You might want to take a look at the Kindle Fire HD. It will let her do all of that and it has parental controls that will let you control what she is exposed to. I have one, although at 72 I don't feel a great need for parental controls. :)

It's a really nice device and it'll do everything her Ipod does and a lot more.

There are a lot of other good tablets you might want to look at but this sounds like a really good fit for what you've described.

She can put music and books on her iPod.

And play Angry Birds :)

I dunno, I am just one grandma that thinks bikes and roller blades are so much better than electronics. With her iPod she can listen to audiobooks while she bikes.

But I'm just one opinion and you can see by the downvotes, that people think I'm wrong :)

My 7 year old requested extra chores and thought up other money raising activities like a lemonade stand, all for a Kindle Fire HD. It it enroute right now to be given to him at his birthday along with the accessories (and extended warranty) that are his present from us. He's usually pretty good with his stuff. I plan on using the Free Time parental controls to limit the game playing to weekends really. But he has an iPod Touch also that is for the games and music. I am proud of him for picking a goal and working towards it. We have asked family to give him Amazon gift cards for his birthday and christmas to help him build up his library though we will use the lending library and e-book public library. Electronics are what you make of it. He spends as much time if not more climbing trees, playing sports, etc. He sees his dad and I read a lot on our Kindles and wants to be a "story teller" or an illustrator himself. So I am all for the Kindle for many reasons. As long as you balance it with other things, I don't see the problem. We live 6000 miles from our family so when we go home, its either a 9 or 14 hour flight. Between the iPod, DS, and his drawing, he usually is kept busy when not sleeping/eating. His Kindle will just add to the options. We will be driving a lot too when visiting the US next so it will be a handy tool for him to read up on places that we will be going. Good luck and I hope that your daughter enjoys hers as well as I think my son will.
