Welcome come on in and browse through the links. There's coffee and tea on the counter and there are muffins and croissants inside the glass cabinet. Butter and assorted jellies are in the trays next to the coffee pot. Later, I'll serve some turkey tacos and pumpkin roll.

Please come back and tell us what you get from the free links. Or if you've read a previously Free book drop in and tell what you thought of it...

The roar of sirens broke the silent reprieve I'd fallen into. I still held Barb in my arms, praying, willing her to live, though I knew she was dead. Nothing made sense even the sirens.
Had I called the police? I didn't remember, but I resented the intrusion into my grief.
Gravel rattled against car frames. Two doors opened and slammed shut. I heard footsteps on the bare stone of the entryway as men entered the house. I tried to call to them, but my voice was choked with emotion. Guns drawn they entered the kitchen one after the other. The first lowered his weapon at the gory scene and spewed what looked like the remains of coffee and a jelly doughnut.
The other cop an older man held his gun steady. "Put her down, Dr. Gristler."
I looked down the barrel of his gun, but I couldn't let go. Barb was gone. Nothing else could get through the haze of emotional trauma.
Nothing, except the cold fire of vengeance throbbing in my chest.
The first cop recovered and pulled Barbara from my arms.
I didn't resist. My arms fell to my side numb and limp.
The younger officer stripped the bloody gloves from my hands then cuffed me and guided my body to his car.
I didn't care. It was like I was in some strange nightmare that I couldn't wake up from.
And at the moment it mattered little if I did. Everything inside me had died. I wanted my life to end, but death too had evaded my desire.
Hours passed unnoticed as the nightmare continued. I don't remember the drive to the station or the time I spent locked in grief, praying I'd wake up and all would be well.
The numbing chill of ice on my forehead shocked me at last into consciousness and I looked up.
Eddie, Laredo's top detective, pulled a cold compress from my head. "Come on Doc we need you to snap out of it?"
Of all the detectives, I had to get Eddie. We didn't get along very well-at least not since I testified for the defense in a trial, Eddie thought he had all sown up. He had conveniently lost the exculpatory evidence I'd put on his desk. He was almost canned over the deal and should have been, but the brass liked him. Most of his cases stuck and that was good for the politicians, but it left me wondering how many innocent men were behind bars.
Bright florescent light flooded my vision. My head throbbed as I lowered it to the table.
Eddie seated himself across from me and picked up his coffee. My eyes focused on the ace and king of hearts on the side of his cup.
"Want some?" he asked.
"Cream no sugar."
Eddie went to the door and spoke to someone outside. When he returned he had four folders in hand and he laid them out in order. Barbara's file, being the newest was laid to his far right. Eddie didn't say anything at first, he just fished his glasses out of his shirt pocket and opened the folders one at a time. I knew the tactic well. He was baiting me with knowledge he may or may not have.
I was a suspect.
How could I be a suspect?
I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I knew I would be, but knowing doesn't lessen the shock.
I had worked with these guys. Didn't they know how much I loved Barb? I could never hurt her.
I looked over Eddie's shoulder at the one way glass. How many times had I sat on the other side and listened to other husbands say the same thing? Husbands that I knew had killed their wives because I had the evidence in hand to prove it.
I held my tongue, telling myself that Eddie was just doing his job. He wasn't trying to get back at me.
A light tap at the door behind me and Jennifer entered carrying two steaming paper cups, the smell of dark roasted coffee filling the room. I blew across the top and took a sip, scalding my gums. The coffee had an acidic taste, but I blew and sipped again, hoping the shock would help me concentrate.
Eddie looked up with one of those --I'm your best friend, talk to me-- grins. "Are you ready to tell us what happened?"
I nodded. I was innocent after all and I believed the evidence would prove it. Then I could go back to work and find the guy I was going to kill.
Eddie leaned forward, elbows on the table. "How long have you known of your wife's affair."
"What?" My guts twisted inside. I looked in Eddie's eyes searching the truth of his statement. I knew cops could lie and did often, but they usually stayed as near to the truth as they could so the perp wouldn't suspect.
Eddie turned Barbara's folder to me and opened it to the autopsy page-unlike the TV shows our DNA lab had a wait time of five to seven days and that's if they weren't backlogged, so the coroner on duty does blood typing in his preliminary exam-his finger tracing the baby's blood type-- A+ then Barbara's type-- O+. "We checked your record, Doc, you're O+ too. She was having someone else's kid." So tell me Doc, did you kill these other women to make it look like a serial killer or did you catch your wife in bed and stage her murder to look like the others?"
I knew I had the right to be silent and that it would be in my best interest to do so. It's surprising, though how hard it is to claim that right, especially when you're confronted with such devastating information. I felt as if someone had kicked me in the guts. He had to be lying. The report looked real but they were easy to fake.
"You're lying, Barb would never cheat on me." If the report was true then there had to be some other explanation. We had talked about artificial insemination, but I was against it. Still she did want kids maybe...
"Look doc I know it's hard to believe someone you love would cheat on you, but you married a real looker. I don't mind saying I've cast my eyes on her a few times and I caught her looking back too."
I sprang to my feet and grabbed Eddie's shirt, dragging him across the table. "You lying son of a, Barb would never cheat on me especially with a low-life like you."
The door burst open and two men and a female officer rushed in to help. The guys grabbed me from behind and forced me to the floor while the female rammed her knee into my back and yanked my right arm from under me. My hand still clutched the torn remnants of Eddie's shirt. Coffee dripped from the table over scattered pages from Barbara's file.
My face was grounded into the wet tile floor as my left hand was dragged behind me and cuffed to the right.
The three other officers stood up and formed semicircle around me in case I became violent again.
Eddie crawled off the table and bent over me. Dark hair lightly covered the bright red scald mark left by the coffee.
"You're under arrest Dr. Gristler..." He emphasized his statement with a subtle kick to my ribs. "for the murder of Barbara Anne Gristler. You have the right..." He jammed the toe of his other boot into my diaphragm forcing the air from my lungs. "to remain silent. If you choose to ignore that right as you just did. Everything you say and do," Eddie smirked, "will be held against you..."
I lay still as he finished the Miranda, letting the now cool coffee that puddled around my face soothe my anger. It didn't help much.

Just some simple turkey tacos

12 12" flour tortillas
Two medium tomatoes ¼" dice
I head romaine lettuce 1/8 slices across the head and then cut in 3rds
I medium onion ¼ dice
1 lb colby cheese grated
2 lbs lean ground turkey
1/12 tsp garlic salt
½ tsp ground cumin
1 cup roasted diced green chilies
1 tsp olive oil

brown olive oil, onion, turkey, chilies, garlic salt and cumin a skillet and then reduce heat to medium until onions become clear.
Dampen a paper towel and put it inside the tortilla package and heat 1 min in the microwave. I just put everything out buffet style along with some hot sauce sour cream and guacamole then let my family put whatever they like on theirs.

Since Pumpkin seems to be a favorite and I have some puree in the freezer I thought I'll make a pumpkin roll for desert.

Harvest Pumpkin Roll

3 eggs
2/3 cup canned pumpkin or pumpkin puree
1 cup sugar
¾ cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp. ginger
2 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt
1 8oz package creamed cheese
4 Tbsp butter or margarine
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

In a large bowl, combine eggs and sugar. Beat well. Add pumpkin, mixing until thoroughly blended. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices, and salt then add to the egg mixture and mix well. Grease wax paper or parchment paper with butter and line a 10" x 15" cookie sheet. Spread batter over greased paper. Bake at 375 for 15 min. Remove from pan and cool for 15 min.
Place cake on a clean powdered sugar dusted tea towel. Gently remove paper and cool another 10 min. from the 10" side roll cake up jelly roll style in a towel and set aside.

For filling, beat together creamed cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract, blending until smooth. Unroll cake on plastic wrap and spread filling evenly over the cake. Sprinkle optional walnuts over filling and roll the cake back up. Cover with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for 2 hours seam side down. Cut into even slices to serve. Makes 8-10 servings.

She tells herself she's better.

Good morning Suze,,

Sorry I didn't respond to your post last night. My iPad died! My husband just gave it to me for my birthday in May so it is only a few months old. He'll take it to the Apple Store this weekend and hopefully one of their amazing techs will figure out the issues. In any event, I was able to dig my husbands old iPad 1 out of a drawer and get it charged for today. So lucky to have this backup!

It does seem that we store our recipes in a similar way. It seems to work for me. I never thought of using the notepad for my online recipes though. I have been putting them into a document. I'll have to check out the note pad to see if that is a better option.

Good Morning All! Leo- yet another great start that has left me hanging on the edge of my seat.

Nothing was free from my wish list today, but I was able to pick up book #3 from Michael Wallace's The Righteous series for a pretty good price drop down to $1.99 from $3.19.

I updated the "Getting to Know You" list in yesterdays thread and will be glad to add any more folks who wish to join through tonight. After that I think I'll let you folks add any new people who have spotted it late or are newcomers down the road.

Good morning, all...I'm in a bit early because I started the morning at the vet; my little Maine Coon drama queen had a reason to faint on the couch last night, he came running about 7:30 to show me a giant blister (hematoma, they call it) covering the entire inside of his bad (allergic) ear. I googled, and determined that it would be better to wait for the regular doc, cause they don't typically burst, and will need to have surgery to lance and stitch, draining with a needle, it tends to come back in a few days. So we were there when they opened this morning. All my fault, he was in with his brother for annuals Saturday, got bloodwork results call from vet at 5:30 yesterday, and was telling her how nice it was all his childhood traumas and surgeries appeared to be over, as he was a very, very healthy cat. (middle ear canal surgery for a tumor at 6 months, countless antibiotic shots and treatments, cured by eliminating chicken and corn, surgery to remove a 5 inch hairball at 2 years) Two hours later, he had to prove me wrong. :) He does still sneak chicken from his brothers, I am going to have to get more proactive on that. Good thing the Paperwhite shipped on Monday, or I might look at the vet bill and think, I can wait.....hope everyone else's surprises today are good - and/or inexpensive :)

I haven't seen you around the last 2 days or so. I hope all is well......

Thank you for posting First Visions: Second Sight Book One. I picked it up too.

@book fan
How did your golf tournament go this last weekend? I hope I'm remembering correctly that you were planning to play in your first?

@Northern Lights
I hope your son is continuing to do well and has gotten all his energy back after his bout with asthma and the hospital.

ForNevermore: Episode 5 (The dark fantasy serialized thriller). This is the fifth week in a row that the authors have released a ForNevermore episode. Come back next week for the 6th and final episode of Season 1. Worth checking out, to see if you enjoy this YA paranormal series. Everything that Sean Platt and David Wright have written so far has been good to me, and I am hooked on their writing.

Hi TnT,

What a shock after hearing how healthy he was ! Did he have his surgery already?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 2, 2012 7:24:14 AM PDT
TerryInTexas says:
No, not yet, they do surgeries later in the day. It's minor, but since they have to lance the blister and then stitch the ear back together, he has to be under. Asked the vet to call me and give me the details before they do it. It's just one of those dumb things, he scratched too hard and broke blood vessels under the skin, which then drained between the cartilage and skin, making a blister. (sorry if tmi). So I'm also thinking I may be putting Soft Paws on the bottom toenails as well, harder to do damage that way in the future.
