Font size problem with 5.1 update?

I just updated my Kindle Touch to 5.1 and suddenly some books appear to have different font sizes than before the update. It appears that the 'default' font size is now too small to read, there is a lack of proportionality to each step in the font size change menu (one step up goes from super small to pretty big with no steps in between), and the smallest readable size now is very close to the largest possible size font. Anyone else seeing this?

Dianne, we're seeing that behavior on both of our Basic models. We just noticed it last night.

I have the same problem. Hopefully they come out with a fix soon.

Yes. I'm calling CS when I get home from work. I have 3 basics - two have the problem, one doesn't. The one that doesn't has not had the upgrade.

Very glad to hear other people are seeing this. Increases my perception that this will be addressed soon. Thanks.

Has the *Touch* had an update recently? I recall seeing one for the basic, but not the KT.

I've had the font size problem described with the odd random book for quite some time - just assumed it was a book problem...

I am having the same problem with the update. I hpe they get a fix out soon.

Do you happen to have an ETA on a fix? thx.

Dianne, I have seen no mention of a fix. Amazon is aware of the issue, beyond that, I have no additional info.

I spoke to them last night. The rep was having trouble replicating the problem. He asked me to try downloading one again, and, surprise, our wi-fi signal was wonky (thanks as always, Time Warner). I'm going to download a couple of the ones that had the problem today - he's going to call me this evening.

Speaking of this update, my sister has an additional problem with hers. Since the update happened, she's been unable to sync - the device just freezes and needs to be re-booted whenever she tries.

I'm going to delete the books and redownload them, but since we are seeing the exact same behavior on both Basic Kindles, I doubt it will change anything.

I agree. Two of mine have the problem, one doesn't. The one that doesn't have the problem also doesn't have the upgrade.

My family has 4 Kindle Touch units... we did some experimenting and the old OS had no font problem and immediately upon updating to the 5.1 the font problem appeared. Doesn't appear for all books. I wonder if there's something in the original formatting options for a book that is related to the issue?

I've had the problem on four books, two purchased after the update, and two that were fine before the update. Amazon didn't seem very interested in the problem. Perhaps a bunch of returned books from the Kindle e-ink users would add a little urgency.

Since this forum has not been flooded by complaints, I don't think that many people are returning books.

Wait until the rest of the bifocal crowd gets some (now) defective books ;)

Are there specific books that have the problem? I haven't yet noticed it on my upgraded Kindle Basic, but perhaps I haven't been trying it with the same books you have?

Dorsie says:
On the Kindle Touch, these have very tiny fonts.

Never Con a Corgi (Leigh Koslow Mystery Series)
Silenced by the Yams (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery #3)
The Haunted

in the case of the first two, other books by the same authors do not have the problem. I purchased "Silenced by the Yams" prior to the update, and it was fine then.

The fourth book I was having trouble with seems to have been fixed sometime in the last 24 hours. I had done several reloads, but today's reload fixed it. However, it now displays blank pages on an Android phone if the background is set to black.

I just opened "Silenced by the Yams" and you are right, it is teeny, tiny print but when checking the font, it still shows what I normally have the font set at. Not sure if I will be able to read this one if it isn't fixed!

Thanks, yes, I'm seeing what you describe on my upgraded Kindle Basic with Silenced by the Yams (A Barbara Marr Murder Mystery #3), though the same book on my Kindle Keyboard running 3.3 and on my Fire running 6.3.1 looks normal. I'll report it to Amazon when I have a few moments today.

This one can be fixed by converting it to .MOBI in Calibre.

I just got off the phone with Roger, a Kindle Specialist. He was not able to duplicate the problem on his own Kindle Touch with 5.1.0, so I referred him to this thread for verification that multiple users are having the problem. It's going to the programming team now.

Thank you and P. Burks for taking the time to duplicate it. It gave me the evidence I needed to have the problem escalated. Of course, multiple reports to Amazon will greatly help, too. :)

Edit to correct version number.

If 5.1.1 isn't a typo, he's using a newer update that may have fixed the problem.

No, it was a typo. Thanks for pointing it out.

My Kindle automatically updated yesterday evening - the document "Your Kindle is Updated" just suddenly appeared. In settings the version appears to be Kindle 4.1.0 (1615370055).

I have created a MOBI eBook, and after the upgrade I had the same font size problem with my book, but not with others.

The original source for the book was Word (because I have published a paperback). I saved the Word document as filtered HTML. Next I had to strip out lots of rubbish from the HTML, but the imbedded CSS styles included font size attributes e.g. font-size: 10pt; which I didn't change. This didn't give a problem prior to the software update, now I get the font size problem described above.

I have fixed the problem through two actions:

1. I removed all font-size settings from the CSS statements, and checked what it all looked like with default Kindle text sizes

2. Where I needed to adjust font sizes, I added font-size attributes using the em unit e.g. font-size: 0.8em

The font sizes now look OK.
