I have a generation 2 Kindle w/special offers. I've heard that once charged, the charge lasts at least 3 weeks. Mine is only staying charged for 7-8 days. Can anyone tell me if this is the 'norm'?

JES says:
Everything depends on how much you actually use the kindle or what you are doing with the kindle. If you play a lot of games on your kindle or you read 2 hours a day on your kindle you aren't going to get 3 weeks on one charge.

JES is right. Also, if you have special offers, you have a Kindle 3 (or basic Kindle or Touch), not a Kindle 2. :)

When they advertise the battery life they never say "at least 3 weeks". They will say, rather, "up to 3 weeks" and then say something like "estimate based on 30 minutes reading per day".

Some of the things that can reduce the length of a charge include:

-Leaving wireless on (particularly if you don't have a strong signal)
-Audio (audiobooks, text-to-speech, or music)
-Games / Active Content
-Indexing (Downloaded books are indexed so that they can be searched. If you download lots of books at once, or one gets 'stuck' indexing, your battery can drain more quickly. To see if something is stuck, type a nonsense string into the search field on the home page. Unless you've downloaded a book very recently, it should say 'No items found'. If a book is stuck, try removing it and re-downloading.)

Also, the projected length of a charge is based on just 30 minutes of reading per day. You may just be reading much more than that.

Oh, and you can go here to figure out which Kindle you have - http://amazon.com/help/kindle/which.

That's kind of what I figured, but, I was assuming that the people who were telling me the charge lasts that long used their Kindle as much as I do...probably assumed wrong, lol! Thank you for your input! Actually, I do play games on it for probably a total of at least an hour/day and also probably read at least that much a day!

Indeed. The 2nd generation Kindle is the white one. There was never a special offers version.

Ok, have really been confused about what 'generation' Kindle I have! I was told at Office Max that mine was a 'second generation' Kindle (???). It's probably just the basic Kindle...it has a button to click for the keyboard, not the one with the visible keyboard at the bottom, and I know it's NOT a Kindle Touch. It's pretty small...6 oz. supposedly. Thanks!

So there's no keyboard on the actual device? Just a button to bring up the keyboard on the screen?

That's a basic Kindle, or a Kindle 4. Definitely NOT a second generation Kindle. The sales person was way off. ;)

Well, I learned NOT to leave Wireless on...for that reason--so I ONLY turn it on when downloading an item from Amazon. I do play games quite a bit. And, I read MUCH more than 30 min/day!!! So, guess I won't worry about only getting 7-8 days out of a charge! I will follow the link to see which Kindle I have, thanks for your input!

Correct, just a button to bring up the keyboard on the screen. So, it's a Kindle 4...is that the same as '4th Generation Kindle'?

Thanks...I hadn't been able to find anywhere that gave me an idea of how long I could expect the charge to last...not anywhere in actual Kindle information, anyway. And, I use it much more than 30 min/day!

Yes, it is - also referred to here on the board as the Kindle Basic. You can also tell because when you press the Menu key and choose Settings, at the bottom of the screen you'll see the software version is 4.x.x.

Ahhh...So I just did that and, sure enough, 'Version: Kindle 4.0'...had no idea...it helps to know where to look!!! Thanks!
