So each of my 4 kids are getting a Fire for Christmas. I was super excited when I saw that Free Time was now available. (I have been setting them up with all the books, music and apps we have been buying over the last few months so they are ready to go come the big day.)

So I signed up for the free time and loved it, loved the extra access to the additional books and characters, etc. The only issue is I can't access any of the music that we have been downloading and adding to the cloud.

I have setup this amazon account for just them. I add the gift cards from family to this split account since they are close in age all the books, apps and music are shared.

So is there an app that I can download that I can check for them to access the cloud music? I tried the amazon mp3 app but that can't be downloaded to a fire.

The biggest plus to free time is being able to limit app time and screen time, I don't plan on buying videos as I we have netflix. I have the parent controls set on each for access to only apps, music and books. No purchasing, etc. I just liked the additional ease that Free Time offered.

So perhaps this can be updated on a new release? A huge oversight on Amazon's part? I am sure that I am not the only one that has music for their kids on their kindles.

Currently, the only work around is to use an app that is a music player to access music files, and add that to the Kindle Free Time profile. I believe the music will have to be downloaded from Amazon to the Fire to work, but bear with me as I am not 100% sure since I do not use Kindle Free Time myself.

I of course NOW see the other posts, the search function wasn't working when I searched this before.

Any thoughts on which app to try? I need one that will access the Amazon cloud player. Amazon MP3 will not work as an app for a fire.
The other thread I found here also had people trying apps, but nothing concrete with a report back of something working.

Would love to see an answer to this myself, loving the Freetime app as this Kindle is a x-mas gift for my 9 year old, but music is a big reason for her wanting a tablet. Haven't been able to find a workaround. This is frustrating. I'm using my own password so I can share some of my content with her but I do not want her having access to ALL my media.

We're using this music player app in Freetime - Rocket Music Player. There are several others in the appstore that you might want to look at as well.

You will need to download the music to the device in order for it to show up in the player.

Ann...That worked like a charm! Yahooweee!

I just set it all up, tested it in freetime and had only one issue. It may be a dumb question, but I can't find a volume control anywhere! I am guessing I have to pay for the full version, but before I do thought I would ask if it is right in front of me and that I am just not seeing it.

Thanks again!

Are you kidding? The entire purpose of this free time functionality is to give my kids restricted access to approved content via Amazon, but they can't access music from the cloud?

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 25, 2012 1:10:04 PM PST
Yep. However the work around with the rocket music app is working great. You cant limit the music unless you keep yours on the cloud and download theirs. I'm hoping a future update will add it in.

Works for me since I only use my Amazon account to download books and I can select which books,my kid can access. But yeah, this is working with music app now and my daughter can now access songs I transferred from my laptop.

Thank you! I was searching for the same issue and would like it if Amazon would solve music the same way they solved books. I like being able to "hand" books to my kids from my own account. I'd like to "hand" music to them the same way.

So... how do I download music to the individual Kindle Fire machines?

Press and hold on the song or album on the cloud. Choose to download. Only music on the device will play in the rocket app.

Hi, I've placed some .mp3 music files into the Music folder on my Kindle fire but the Rocket Music Player app is not detecting the songs. Suggestions? Thanks!

In reply to an earlier post on Dec 26, 2012 8:06:12 PM PST
Did you perhaps make folders or playlists on the cloud? I ask since I made playlists for the kids, however it only made them in the cloud not the device even though I thought out was adding out to the device since I was making them while device was highlighted.

You do have to download each song/album to the actual device by holding down on the cloud album and downloading. Then when I launched rocket music it loaded those all in . I have not purchased any music since I launched the app. Perhaps there is a sync option in rocket music that needs run?

I feel so deceived. I must have missed the part where Amazon said that Freetime had a music management feature.

I am using songbird for music in freetime and porting music I had on iTunes on my Mac. Most bought in last few years so no dorm issues . But this means music is counted as app time so limits on that have to be adjusted. Same with email. Using kaiten mail app with kidsavemail as the server, which makes it app.

D**n autocorrect. :) Or did you mean music available only in dorms?

Misspelled reference to DRM (Digital Rights Management), which locks content to iTunes platform. DRM is off on $1.19 titles and anything downloaded from iTunes Sync.

I've had good luck so far with rocket player. Til today anyway. I purchased kids bop 23 for my daughter and download it to the fire. It shows up in the native music player just fine, but will not show up in rocket player. On a side note, I mistakenly purchased the cd. Then I saw that a digital version of my purchase was added to the cloud, so problem solved, right? Wrong. It was this version that I downloaded. Is this an unsupported file type or something?

Once you put it on the kindle and not just the cloud you need to reboot it. At least that's what works for us.

Late followup on this thread - I would really like to see Music added as a separate category within Freetime - I don't want to count listening to music against the kid's app time limit.

Would also like to see music added to free time

I have considered downloading an app for music listening but its a work around, not a solution. Some of the songs I have purchased I dont want my kids listening to. Several of the songs have downloaded to the device when I logged out of freetime. I can disable that but the point is this. Books, vids and apps are controlled by the parental controls in freetime. I would really like to see music done the same way. We have bought several albums and songs just for them off of AmazonMP3 but they cant listen to them on their device. I agree with Chris Callanan where using a 3rd party app will only burn up the allowed app time. I have sent in emails to Amazon about this but so far its either falling on deaf ears or its in the works and just not finished yet. Perhaps their holding it till Christmas to make buying their devices more desirable to parents. Personally I hope its not that. My kids are on summer break and now is the time when they could really use a music player without it cutting into study time. I hope Amazon will listen to their customers and produce a Music section in Freetime that will give Song, Artist, Album, Genre control over music (at least) plus allow streaming from the cloud for content.
