The owner deregisters the kindle from their account, the new owner registers it to their own account.

You would deregister it from one account and then do a factory reset and then the new owner registers it under their account.

I have a related, but slightly different problem. Before I bought my Kindle, I used the Kindle reader app for PC. Now, my Kindle (handheld) won't allow me to read my books in my PC-based library. It says it is a different user, even though I have the same login info. Any suggestions?

The books are DRM protected. This means each device or app has a different license. You need to make sure the Kindle is registered to the same account as the PC app. Then you download either from the Kindle archive list on your device or go to your Manage Your Kindle page here on Amazon.

Thanks. I live in Germany and it could be that my PC reader is registered on Amazon.de while my reader is on Amazon.com.

My husband and I both have Amazon accounts. We bought a Kindle Fire HD for our son on my husband's account, but would like to switch "ownership" to my account to be able to select books, etc for it. We've already loaded some games on the Kindle (purchased on my husband's amazon account) and I don't want to lose them during the factory reset. Is there any way to link the Kindle to both Amazon accounts? (I also have a Kindle of my own associated with my account.)

Have you checked out Amazon's Family Library for kindles? My husband & I have our own accounts but they are linked so we can access books on either account from each of our devices.
