I want to know why I can't buy a Kindle Fire and use it in Canada. What's the problem? Surely in this day and age a wifi product should be available to use in the whole of North America? Seems rather archaic that I can't

Since you used the word archaic in your post, I will not make a joke here. Good day.

What are you talking about? It was a simple question. Didn't need a mysterious answer

It has to do with international borders and copyright laws. There are other threads on this, but coming from equally-disappointed folk in China, Japan, Sweden, Ireland, Mexico, and other countries outside the United States.

As a long-time (Cdn) Kindle user, I too was perplexed, annoyed and disappointed to discover that I cannot upgrade to a Kindle Fire. Difficult to fathom why Amazon would chose to exclude and , possibly, alienate the entire international sector of their customer base. I will be retiring my Kindle and Amazon account and moving on to one of the many other good products out there.

The reason that Amazon is not currently making the Kindle Fire available to Canada is that about 90% of the Amazon content used on the Fire will not work there. All you would have access to would be Kindle Books. You would not be able to purchase apps, music or video. Would you rather they make it available to you, but not have any of these features work? Probably not.

If you want a similar experience to the Fire, I would suggest the Nexus 7. You can read Kindle ebooks on it, and you are not stuck with Amazon functions that will not work for you in Canada.

Thanks for these answers. I am in Canada and have a kindle and so I couldn't understand what the problem is. Why all the problems with copyright etc? What is the difference between the kindle that I have with wifi and the Fire? I can download anything on to an iPad or my laptop. I was thinking of upgrading to the Fire but obviously that's out of the question. Time Amazon did something about it.

Well, all the "content" that is available to be used on the Fire has to be licensed for use in Canada, and copyright holders can also vary from country to country, as do international laws governing copyrights and licenses. It's a big job to get enough content licensed and available for customers to be able to release the Fire for sale in any given country. Amazon has literally *just* started doing this internationally (on Oct. 25th) , with the Fire released in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Japan. They may have had an easier job organizing and making content available in Europe since all of those countries are EU members, except, of course, Japan.

I'm sure Amazon would love to be able to sell Canadians more stuff. They just have to be able to do it legally first.

I'm flattered you would call my answer mysterious but there is no mystery. I wasn't really trying to answer. I made a joke without having to make one, as I'm wont to do sometimes. Nothing negative, but feel free to just ignore me. Theres a button ↓
