1. Through your pc or laptop: go to your Amazon/Manage Your Content and Devices and deregister device
2. On your phone (Settings/Application Manager/Kindle): Clear cache
3. Uninstall all updates (you can't uninstall the app)
4. Restart phone
5. Download app/updates
6. Register device
7. Another restart might be good
When you launch the app it can take a while to synch if you have a lot of books in your library, even if they are not on your device. Sometimes I get a blank screen and it doesn't seem to load the carousel. I found if I use the search tool and pull up a random book it kicks the carousel back into place. Sometimes I have to restart my phone once or twice to be able to launch the app properly again.

Looks like Eric's list of things to do worked for me, also. Thank goodness. Was thinking I was going to throw the wretched phone across the ROOM. Thanks Eric!

Basically these steps worked for me. However my Droid DNA seems to think I always have to have a kindle app installed (but not actually the most recent version). The tricks I needed to do were

0) put phone into airplane mode
3a) use my file manager to delete the folder named "Kindle"
8) Make sure no longer still in airplane mode
9) Allowed it to reinstall the kindle app automatically
10) Do NOT allow it to upgrade the kindle app. It appears that any upgrade after the 2012 release date of the DNA breaks the app.

It would be really nice if they could fix the updates.

This doesn't work for me. The item gets delivered, but I get the same error when trying to open it.
Clearing the cache also doesn't work for me.

Eric says:
Had the same problem with my new phone, HTC One M8.

Here are the steps I had to take:
1. Deregister device
2. Clear cache (Settings, Apps, Kindle, Clear cache)
3. Uninstall app
4. Restart phone
5. Download app
6. Register device
7. Read books and profit from their valuable knowledge!

I noticed that if I opened the app after downloading it, and it already knew my email address ("Hello, Eric!"), then it wasn't going to work. In this case, I also went to my file manager after step 3 and deleted the entire folder labeled "Kindle."

go back to the beginning of this post. there are several different fixes.

I think one of the kindle updates had some bugs in it, and it caused this problem for a lot of folk.

For me, I had to unregister kindle, then uninstall kindle(or updates), (reboot) then clear all kindle data from my phone,(reboot) and then re install kindle(if kindle can preloaded on your phone you need to re install all the updates. and the re register.

It took me several months before I got all the steps right. Using a app manger to clean out all the kindle data was the missing step, that finally got it to work. (or maybe it just took them that long to fix the app.)

Other people have had success with other methods.

I. Recenntlyn sent my tablet back to manufacturer. They obviously updated software on the tablet. Problem solved.

This post is from three years ago so I'm guessing you have either fixed the problem or given up. But if you're still looking for a solution, here it is:
- Go to "Your Account" from the Amazon home page.
- Click "View Your Digital Orders" under "Order History."
- Your e-books will appear here. Click on "Manage Your Content And Devices" next to the book you're having problems with.
- Click on the button under the "Actions" column and select "Deliver."
- Click on the appropriate device and hit "Deliver."

That should do it!

yeah, well that cures a lot of things. However, didn't work with mine, and I even restored to factory settings.

Thanks Lain, but that doesn't work for the people that actually have the issue that started this thread. Maybe that works for other issues.

THE SOLUTION

So so much rubbish in this thread.

Go to settings, applications, kindle, select "clear cache", use somethig like app killer or reboot the phone/device, re-open kindle, the issue will be resolved and you can read your books.

Then you can spend some time wondering why people post such drivel on problem t

well, I was told to send my tablet back to the manufacture, which I have done. Waiting to see what will happen now.

I just had this problem on my Nexus 7 2013. I solved it by clearing the app's data in the settings menu and downloading the book again. I did not have to uninstall the program or do anything else.
