Kindle Fire Battery issue

I've never heard of Amazon moving data - I don't believe that the Kindle is even returned to the same state that the new one is sent from, so they never have the two together. Can you connect your old Kindle via USB to get to your files from your PC, or is it completely dead? If possible, copy your entire Music directory from the Kindle to your PC.

I am also having the same proble with Kindle fire battery. Battery will not charge. Question mark appear on the batttery while charging. Waiting from the Amazon for the replacement.

Since many folks (me included) have no such problem and the chances of getting two or three faulty units in a row are astronomically low, it seems likely that something else is going on.

As it happens, I have a new Android smartphone running the same version of Android as the Kindle Fire (Droid Razr Maxx) and the problems reported for the KF look suspiciously similar to reports from owners of those phones. In those cases, the problems appear to stem from a particular charging routine that, over time, confuses the device about the amount of power actually available from the battery.

Here is an approach to try. No guarantees, of course, but the problems KF owners are reporting are so similar to those of the Droid Razr Maxx that I think it's very likely they stem from the same source.

() When you first receive your KF it will be partially charged. Plug it without turning it on and leave it for several hours (ideally overnight) and allow it to fully charge.

() Adopt a regular charging routine so that you charge the KF overnight WITH THE DEVICE TURNED OFF whether you are low on battery or not. This will boot the device into a "charge only" mode rather than a charge while running mode. You can check on the status of the charge from time to time, but DO NOT allow the KF to boot fully in to operational mode. If it does, turn it off again, and plug it into the charger. (Note that it is better to charge the battery regularly even if you seem to have plenty of battery power still available. Lithium-ion batteries will last longer if kept "topped off.")

() Try to avoid completely discharging the KF battery. When it reaches about 15% or so, turn it OFF until you can charge it again.

() Every few weeks use the KF until the battery indicator reaches about 15% and then follow the procedure above.

The key to all of this is to charge the KF daily, whether it seems to need it or not, and do so WITH THE UNIT TURNED OFF.

What is likely happening is that the KF's charging circuitry and battery monitor is getting "out of synch." This is very common for lithium ion batteries and the advice to allow the battery to discharge down to 10-15% and then recharge completely (but not allow the battery to "go dead") is advice that even Apple gives for the iPad. This operation re-syncs the battery and the battery monitor software.

However, it doesn't hurt to do it more frequently. The only downside of more frequent "off charge" procedures is that you have to wait for the KF to boot when you pull it off the charger.

I've added this post to this thread because I see repeated instances of people claiming that their KF's "stop working" or "stop charging" after a few weeks or months. They then claim that a replacement KF runs into the same problem. Since the chances of getting two (or even three) faulty KF's is vanishingly small (based simply on probabilities), it makes sense to look at the way the KF's are being charged and used.

I happen to own an iPad as well as a KF. And Apple recommends (rather cryptically) that the iPad battery be drained to about 15% "once a month," turned off, and recharged. They say this improves the battery "monitoring" function but they don't explain further. And many people misinterpret this to mean that it improves the "battery LIFE."

I strongly suspect that if this same procedure is followed for the KF almost all of the "dead battery," "stopped charging," and "won't turn on" issues will go away.

I'm basing this on experience with both the iPad and an Android smartphone with an identical Android OS and a similar battery architecture. I cannot prove this is the problem people are running into on the KF but I do know that the same problems exist on both of the other devices and the procedure I've recommended (not original with me, by the way) resolves similar problems with those other devices.

jsh1120: Thanks for clarifying. I was responding to the second part of his question where he asked whether it should be off or sleeping, but didn't explain why not regularly charge it while on.

Anyhow, I opted to tack on to this thread. Hope it's helpful for those experiencing what appears to be a minor epidemic of battery and KF "failures" that I strongly suspect are linked to the battery and battery monitor on the KF to be out of sync.

My battery is dead after only a few hours of use. I have tried charging, holding the on button for the 30 second jump start to no avail. I am very disappointed. Thought I was buying quality!

A few hours of use is what you should expect from any tablet. LCD screens take a lot of power to operate. The Fire product page clearly says it will provide 7-8 hours of operation for reading, less if you use WiFi or do anything active like play games.

I tried endless times the 30-seconds trick and the recharging in the past 2 weeks but the battery is still dead. Unfortunatelly I don't have an US address to get it replaced. I had a bad user experience. Don't buy it. Not recommended. I have a 5 years old iPhone based on the same battery type and still works flawlessly. But Kindle Fire is a crappy trash.

I got my Kindle Fire for Christmas and it had been working and charging perfectly until the last week. I had charged it overnight (as per usual) and the next morning it said battery too low to power on. I was not happy. I unplugged the charger and plugged it into a different outlet just to make sure it wasn't a bad outlet. It was fine. I plugged in my Kindle Fire and it showed a green "charged" light right away. I checked and it was still dead. When I plugged it back in, the orange"charging" light came on. That was yesterday afternoon. It still has the orange light. I tried unplugging the charger and turning it on. It did come on, but it shows very little battery charge. What do I do now???

wow! Thanks for all the great advise. I didn't know the wi-fi should be off when not in use or that the kindle should be off when charging.

My kindle had the question mark once and I fixed it but I don't know I fixed it it has it again and I tried the 30second trick and nothing happend............now my kindles battery sign is red with no power at all. Do you know any solutions?

Also when I unplug it it turns off( as in shuts down) and wont turn back on, but it wont charge either.

The question mark means the Fire has lost track of the amount of charge in the battery. Amazon recommends resetting the Fire, and if that does not work contact Customer Service.

To reset it, unplug the charger then hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Release and click once.

To contact Customer Service click the "Contact Us" button on the right and follow the instructions.
