It is great that Amazon added the parental controls. But I needed to do a system restore and it wiped my kindle clean, lost everything. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for sending out a system upgrade that would damage data.

You should be ashamed if you didn't have your data backed up. Good lesson to learn.

I know my son was really upset that he was bumped back to level 0 in Angry Birds. Bummer.

(I'm a writer and created docs that can't be saved to the Cloud that I'll lose if I have to set to factory reset),

and you're calling Amazon the stupid one? Didn't anyone ever tell you to back up everything important on every computer that you use?

bostonjock, it will take you about 3 minutes to hook your Fire up to your computer, and copy the contents into a folder on your desktop. Important data should never just be kept on 1 device. Backing up your data is easy, and if you do have to reset the Fire, your data will be safe.

I read in earlier posts the tech dept is working on a fix. Please post a link if there is a fix. Gonna try to back up now but afraid it's too late.

Rats. I didn't mean to delete that, but to edit it. Anyway, I haven't heard of a fix. I had to do a reset, myself. Cleared the kid's game scores out, sure enough. Bummer, but not the end of the world.

I told him to go read a book. :0)

Yes and their way of fixing it is to have you restore the factory settings, if you don't then it may never get fixed.

It is your choice.

You are now connected to Shiela from
Me:KINDLE UPDATE -- have to enter a password now for parental controls? Password doesn't work. I don't want to delete everything and reset my Kindle. What am I suppose to do?
Shiela:Hi Jason, my name is Shiela. I'll be happy to help you today.
I am sorry to hear that the password for parental control doesn't work. I am going to do my best to make sure you receive all the help you need.
Me:OK. I see this is a widespread problem based on searching for this on the internet. Do you have a fix that doesn't involve me resetting my kindle and losing all my info?
Shiela:Let's try the following workaround. Just to verify this has happened right after updating your software version, correct?
Shiela:Can you please verify if you have a device password?
I had a password before so noone else could use my kindle
This password does not work on the parental controls
Shiela:Oh, I see. Thank you.
How about trying to enter your password?
Me:yes, tried that too
Shiela:Let me go ahead and try to deregister the Kindle from my end. However, before doing so, I need to verify that you are the account holder. Can you tell me the name on your account, your email address, and your billing address, please?

Shiela:Thank you.
How about the zip code, please? I need the zip code as well. Thank you.
it's my daughter Lindsay's Kindle if that helps
Shiela:Yes, it is. Thank you.
Me:but it's under my count
Shiela:I've successfully deregistered the Kindle. May I ask if you can connect the Kindle Fire wirelessly so we can re-register the device?
Shiela:With your Kindle Fire connected via Wi-Fi, tap the Quick Settings icon, then More, then My Account.
Tap the Register button and enter the e-mail address and password of your Amazon account. Tap the Register button when finished.
did that
Shiela:Parental controls should now be turned off. Can you please check the right of the Quick Settings icon and see if there is a lock icon?
Me:They are all back to normal.

Jane, it would be wise of you to take your street address and email address out of your post. This is a public forum and that information shouldn't be in public posts, unless you want to get a lot of spam (and have people find out exactly where you live).

So what exactly does reset do if you still have your apps?
I don't have anything major on my Kindle Fire, but I don't want to lose other apps and bookmarks.

your apps and bookmarks should still be on your amazon account under manage my kindle. you just have to reinstall thm on your kindle.

Posted on Jun 28, 2012 10:33:37 PM PDT
So, why exactly can't amazon email me my lost password or a reset to my email address that is associated with the account that is registered with the kindle?

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 29, 2012 5:51:51 AM PDT
Because Amazon doesn't have your password...

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 29, 2012 5:56:21 AM PDT
Because it's only stored ON the device itself.
