It is great that Amazon added the parental controls. But I needed to do a system restore and it wiped my kindle clean, lost everything. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for sending out a system upgrade that would damage data.

(I'm a writer and created docs that can't be saved to the Cloud that I'll lose if I have to set to factory reset),

and you're calling Amazon the stupid one? Didn't anyone ever tell you to back up everything important on every computer that you use?

bostonjock, it will take you about 3 minutes to hook your Fire up to your computer, and copy the contents into a folder on your desktop. Important data should never just be kept on 1 device. Backing up your data is easy, and if you do have to reset the Fire, your data will be safe.

I read in earlier posts the tech dept is working on a fix. Please post a link if there is a fix. Gonna try to back up now but afraid it's too late.

Rats. I didn't mean to delete that, but to edit it. Anyway, I haven't heard of a fix. I had to do a reset, myself. Cleared the kid's game scores out, sure enough. Bummer, but not the end of the world.

I told him to go read a book. :0)

Yes and their way of fixing it is to have you restore the factory settings, if you don't then it may never get fixed.

It is your choice.

Me:KINDLE UPDATE -- have to enter a password now for parental controls? Password doesn't work. I don't want to delete everything and reset my Kindle. What am I suppose to do?

I had a password before so noone else could use my kindle
This password does not work on the parental controls

How about trying to enter your Amazon.com password?
Me:yes, tried that too
Shiela:Let me go ahead and try to deregister the Kindle from my end. However, before doing so, I need to verify that you are the account holder. Can you tell me the name on your account, your email address, and your billing address, please?

Shiela:I've successfully deregistered the Kindle. May I ask if you can connect the Kindle Fire wirelessly so we can re-register the device?

Shiela:With your Kindle Fire connected via Wi-Fi, tap the Quick Settings icon, then More, then My Account.
Tap the Register button and enter the e-mail address and password of your Amazon account. Tap the Register button when finished.
Me:ok
did that
Shiela:Parental controls should now be turned off. Can you please check the right of the Quick Settings icon and see if there is a lock icon?
Me:They are all back to normal.

I just discovered my Parental Controls were activated, I used the link previously posted to contact cust service, and they fixed my KF in a matter of moments. Problem solved. still have all the books, apps and high scores.

your apps and bookmarks should still be on your amazon account under manage my kindle. you just have to reinstall thm on your kindle.

So, why exactly can't amazon email me my lost password or a reset to my email address that is associated with the account that is registered with the kindle?
