Nope. Not retarded or careless. The prongs inside the charger wore down and ruined the connectors inside the port on one of them, the next just would not hold a charge for more than twenty minutes, and the next would not turn off. No matter what. The tech support said it was all due to the charging port not functioning the way it should.

Wow. We had one replaced, and now it broke for the second time. I thought it was user error as well, but it sure looks like a crappy design is part of the problem. If they do not repair it/swap it, I will open the case, fix it, and find a solution (probably a little epoxy behind the port would remedy the issue).

Since it has been a common issue they have been replacing them for free.

A very large percentage of the first production run of Kindle Fires had the defective charging port. Amazon didn't issue a general recall because not all of them had the problem and it's not like the Kindle will explode if the port breaks. If you contact Amazon they replace them with no questions asked because they know about the defect. Supposedly they fixed the problem with the second production run but who knows.

Just use the box that came with the new one. I have two kindles. The first one was a Christmas present and after seven months the port became to loose to charge. I called them and told them I tried all of their online recommendations and still nothing. I was only on the phone with them for three minutes and had a brand new replacement within two days.

I see I am not alone - frustrated, but not alone. i got my KF at Best Buy and thankfully purchased the protection plan with it so they told me that my options were to either send it in to be repaired/replaced or I could get a refund and purchase the next gen kindle - but I don't want to go that long without my kindle so I guess mine will be going in for repair/replacement this week *sigh* hopefully kindle fixes this problem with the next gen

My thing about elecronics is they come with a 1yr manufactureres warranty so why should I buy an extended warranty up front that starts that day? I don't mind if they would sell it to me 10 months later before the 1yr runs out. I am gussing best buy won't repair it but will they send a new one or a refurbished one I would like to know. Mary

At the top of this page click help then on the right click contact us. I hear if you have them call you they call back quick. I did an online chat and after explaining I tried a new plug plus my cell car charger and the light wouldn't come on to charge they deemed it defective. I was within the 1yr warranty when mine went so they replaced it with a refurbished one and gave me a prepaid mailer to send the defective one back. I got the new one in 2 days so was not without a divice long, great customer service. I bought mine at best buy but it happened 6 months in so couldn't return to best buy. Mary

Shelly, I think all kindle owners have a 1-year warranty from Amazon. Kindle fires have been out less than a year, so you probably have a warranty.

Yes you get a 1yr manufacturers warranty so even if you didn't buy it from amazon and it's defective they will do something. Mary
