I have Touch 5.0.4
Is it critical to have these updates and what are the advantages?

The thread referenced here seems to be dealing with multiple issues. The current thread seems to be focused on XP-SP3. I've tried creating a new thread that includes all OS versions and the non-starting Kindle for PC problem only. Might help clarify the bounds of the problem?

I've started a new thread that attempts to address the "kindle for pc won't open after updating" bug on all windows versions. I invite you to post there if interested.

William, I always install "over" the old version, but the only disadvantage of de-installing the old one first is that you can end up with the K4PC with different decryption key, meaning you would have to remove and re-download the content. Annoying, but no big deal. That happens only sometimes, and I did not figured out why or when. A candidate is de-registering from MYK page.

Otherwise, deinstallation and registry cleaning should, if anything, lower the chances for dll conflicts and other Windows weirdnesses. So, no, I don't believe that installing over the old version would have helped in this case. OTOH, in the old days when auto-update worked, I did not notice it de-installed the old version first.

I found K4PC on an old machine at work today, and updated it, too. So, my list of successful updates now includes 32-bit XP Pro SP3, 32-bit Vista Ultimate SP2 and 64-bit Win7 Pro SP1. Not particularly helpful, I know...

Dusty, this thread is about problems with Kindle for PC application, not any of Kindle devices.

BTW, the current version of Touch software is 5.1.0 and it brings quite a number of enhancements. See

I'm sorry. I'll try and find the right one next time. Have a great week-end.

I installed (was forced to install) the newer version on 7/22 when my trusty old v1.3 no longer opened. I have XP/SP3 and the install went fine. There were other problems with the crappy new v1.10.1, but at least it opened.

I find now that when I "buy" a new book, it won't show up in the archives and/or the Downloaded Items in the newer version even though I had it sync and check for new stuff. I had to shut K4PC down and reopen (double click on icon) and the new books are there.

v1.10.1 is pure junk and it's a travesty that we are forced to use it.

Today I discovered that my Kindle for PC would not open on my computer, and the one that I have on my cheap Android tablet only showed the last book that I'd been reading but not any of the others. Luckily, I found this thread and your suggestion to download a new one has totally fixed the problem - and only took a few seconds to do. Thank you so much!

I downloaded the K4PC today and it hasn't opened AT ALL! I'm about to uninstall. :( Someone please help. Also, I'm running Windows 7.

I have posted a solution that worked for me on the thread

Good luck.

This seems to be a computer by computer problem. I have a desktop computer that never had Kindle for PC installed on it. I installed it there and it works with no problems. This is a WIN XP SP3 computer. The laptop I am having all the problems with had the old Kindle installed. I uninstalled it, then tried to install the new one. This seems to be the problem. If I had simply installed the new over the old, it might be working, but I didn't. What a pain this has been. And the registry trick didn't work for me either.

Running XP sp3 on a Dell and Yes, I installed it over the existing version initially with the same result as all of the following attempts......the only thing I haven't done is to uninstall and deregister (high pitch whistling noise coming from my ears):

I reinstalled the new over the old (Windows XP) and it didn't work for me. Colossal pain!

I have the same problem - it is such a relief to find it isn't just me but I really need it to work soon as I am trying to write a dissertation which would go a lot quicker if I could search and copy and paste references from some kindle books. I have talked to support twice and they have no idea what to do!!! I too have XP-SP3 ... the last file the installer installs is kindle.lnk but indicator only looks about half way across. Then it launches the kindle app but doesn't get to the splash screen (I can see it launches from task manager) - then it just stops ...

Bush woman says:
What do you mean by latest version? The one for Windows 7? Do you mean to say that the newer version will work on XP computers ?

MEH says:
The latest version is supposed to work for Windows 7, Vista and XP - that is what it says on the download site ...

Frustrating isn't it? I have phoned Amazon 3 times, been promised a call back 3 times (because the operator didn't know what to do about it) and received not one call back at all .... pah!

Same problem, XP-SP3 is a no go. IMO it's very stupid to break something that wasn't broken in the first place...

I don't how to make the registry change but I did deinstall and installed the latest Kindle software for XP, SP3. Kindle still stalls, after I start it. I did notice the problem emerged after I first used Cloud version of Kindle on my PC. I don't know if there's a causal connection there, but perhaps the Cloud version caused a conflict of some kind. Also, I tried to open Kindle on PC by using the cable to transfer a file from the Kindle unit to the PC, but the Kindle PC program still stalled. Hope this info is helpful in resolving the problem. There's no way to underline with the Cloud version, is there? I miss the ability to underline and it may push me to contact Amazon directly on this problem.

I have downloaded and installed twice, still no luck. I don't understand why a company of Amazon's size hasn't figured out more of the technical issues surrounding the formatting (on the author/publisher side) and display (on the consumers side) of Kindle books. Even more amazing is that, in spite of all these glitches, the readers and ebooks are wildly popular. Imagine how well they will do when they get the kinks worked out!

Ah grasshopper, twice is nothing - I am well into the 20s now and 4 conversations on with Amazon support. I am now a grandmaster in Kindle for PC failing to work! Support don't know what is wrong but they are writing everything down and trying to fix it. <sigh> I resorted to the cloud reader a while after the fails started, Paul, so I don't think it is that. Sadly you can't search or copy and paste to do citations on the cloud reader .... <sigh>
