I had the same problem everything was colourful and tidy and suddenly all went black and white . Here's what i did after experimeting with my kindle for weeks . This procedure is up to you , go to the device settings and choose the deregister option . Now register your kindle with a new amazon account once again deregister your device and finally register your fire , this time with your real account.

Thanks, but I don't own a Kindle. I publish books on Kindle (and CreateSpace) and use KDP's own previewer app to see on my computer what a Kindle book I have prepared will look like when it is displayed on a Kindle, Kindle Fire, iPad, Nook, etc. The previewer simulates those devices. It seems there is a bug in the Kindle Fire simulator.

I am having the same problem and from what I can see from this thread that there is no current fix for this issue. Every single App I have downloaded is a grey box, including the software icons that was included with the Kindle when I bought it 2 days ago

Sadly, Amazon does not seem to give a damn about issues with Kindle Fire and our inability to access all the thousands of free books available. The device should be store independant for sure. They just push their for fee books

Calibre does nothing. It looks like another Calibre bug?

Posted on Apr 10, 2012 1:30:05 PM PDT
I have the problem now and am downloading my books directly from Amazon. They had covers and all was well, now some do and others don't. It's not a Calibre thing it's a Kindle thing.

E E Pearce Jr - To restore your books' covers, reset your Kindle app.

From the Home screen:

* Settings (gear icon) > More...> Applications
* Set filter to "All Applications"
* Swipe down to the Amazon Kindle App
* Clear Data

It may take a few minutes for all of your books to reappear. Despite the warnings you will not lose your books by doing this.

Doing the Clear Data thing didn't work for me. I had book covers for all my books when I first sideloaded them. They showed up correctly on my fire. After a few weeks, some of the covers went blank. I tried restarting as well & some covers randomly came back, others didn't. Some of the covers were on my kindle for two weeks before vanishing. Ones that I sent using my email, I can delete & redownload & the covers return. I guess I will have to email the others that I sideloaded to make the covers reappear?

I also went to android market and searched kindle app and had the option to uninstall which I did and all my books came back. Thanks for advice.

What finally worked for me was to remove everything from the carousel (only) except the current read. I hadn't done that before and had too many books for it to be useful anyway. Now I can have the books I'm reading and switch between them as wanted without swirling through a hundred or more. The only down side was removing them all one book at a time, but it was worth it.

i actually tried deleting all my books at one time using calibre, and i reinstalled them, only to find that nothing changed and i still have blanks for book covers

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 4:43:47 PM PDT
I did not delete and books from anything. All I did was press in the book icon in the carousel and selected "Remove from Carousel" from the little sub-menu that popped up. The books remained in my Kindle Device Library and ONLY disappeared from the carousel. New books still appear there and in my device library but I simply remove them from the carousel as above.

My opinion is the carousel gets too many covers to scroll and cannot display all those images.

M. Nguyen says:
i tried that and my kindle still still didn't show the covers, even after i restarted it

I'm sorry it doesn't work for you. There's likely any number of things that can go wrong, and at best, we've eliminated one more that will not fix it.

hey i actually did the clear data thing and, in combination with removing books from carousel, they actually came back, only books that i were reading before i did it don't have the cover showing in the carousel, but books i did not read before the procedure do now.

Posted on Apr 23, 2012 8:12:14 PM PDT
Great news. Perhaps if you've already read them it may be good to remove them from the carousel?

In reply to an earlier post on Apr 24, 2012 6:46:30 AM PDT
After clearing my carousel down to about 15 books & doing the clear data, it worked. Covers came back. Not sure why it made a difference since all my books came back to the carousel. Covers also show correctly in my shelves now. Weird.

I was getting really frustrated with this problem, but I downloaded the Fire software update and it has not occurred since.... I guess Amazon corrected it.

I have version 6.3.1 and still have the problem. It happened the other day again after plugging it in to my computer. Some of the books have covers in the carousel but not on the shelves. It's odd.

So tried the various remedies to this problem listed here, none worked. I even tried a second factory reset (first was result of the parental controls glitch, and what caused my cover issues in the first place). Not only did it not help with the covers, I actually LOST titles as well for some of the missing covers.

I spoke with customer service earlier today, and they determined it was an issue with the device, and I'm being sent a replacement. Works for me I guess.

...and the new Kindle didn't solve the missing cover issue, but at least I can see the titles again. It is also the same books as with my previous Kindle. I didn't have this problem before the update. -_-
