I very much doubt that the popping is anything dangerous. However, if you feel your Kindle getting very warm or hot, that could be a problem.

Please PLEASE everyone talk to Kindle Customer Service through the Help portal on the Amazon site. Like I said, the more they hear about this problem the more motivated they will be to fix it.

At this point, it's difficult to say what exactly is causing the problem. Look at the questions I've asked in earlier posts and see if you can answer them. I may be able to tell you more about what's causing the problem if I know more about it... I don't own a KF so I can't test it for myself.

[EDIT] A Q&A thread on the XDA Developers site, which is full of very smart people, seems to have come to the conclusion that this is a bug with the speaker software when the speakers are in mid-to-high volume range. Try turning them down or off, or using headphones, and see if that helps. It's also been reported that turning off the "Dolby Digital" option gets rid of it. If it's just the software, there's no point in sending it back for another one, as that new one will have the same software. But a software bug is fixable with an update, and Amazon is very good at fixing these sorts of issues when motivated by customer pressure.

Mine don't pop ever, (and I WAS complaining about hot - but after a reset - not factory restore -that seemed to go awqy). Volume up or down, surrounded by other tabs or just readers, no popping.

I think there are just some defective units.

C. J.,

There are reports of the popping noise occurring with the volume turned all the way to zero. Can't confirm that, however, since my KFHD has not had the problem. It may well be that the reports are incorrect and the problem occurred just when no audio was playing.

That's the first I've heard of it, then. No one on the XDA Dev. forum I referenced had that problem. So either it's as you suggested and people hadn't figured out the difference, or the problem is something else. Unfortunately with so little to go on I can't help any more than the suggestions I've already said.

I understand everyone who's annoyed, but that's the risk of being an early adopter. They do have a 1-yr warantee and a 30-day return policy so my advice to anyone with this problem and hasn't owned their Fire HD for very long is to check up with Kindle CS and be patient.

I disagree about the defective units. I'm on my 3rd Kindle fire HD and it has done the same as the other 2. I refuse to believe that all 3 are defective. I'm assuming it will be fixed with the update coming up. Let's hope. If not I may have to take advantage of the 1 year warranty in the future.

Mine has popped twice. Once while it was laying flat with no other electronic devices around. once while upright in my computer room with lots of devices. Both times the volume is smack in the middle.

Edited to add that I don't have any apps that should cause this. I only have installed the factory apps (minus skype) and the weather app. The noise occurred before I added the weather app and removed skype. Actually one noise occurred before I removed and added and the other one occurred after I removed/added.

C. J. Mitchell,

Confirmed with another poster whom I trust that the popping noise occurs with the audio completely minimized. I don't envy the Amazon engineers trying to figure it out.

I think you're correct. Given the fact that the problem affects only some units, the chances you could receive three defective units are extremely low. It would be interesting to know what apps you're running on your device(s). You might provide that information to Amazon via the feedback option on the KFHD.

Do me a favor and slide your pull down menu down. Do you see an audio book listed? I had an audio book there last week, and I am pretty sure when I heard the popping noise, it was in that window then. I just downloaded a book that gave me a free audio sample a couple days ago and there is an audio book in the pull down menu again. Now I am getting that popping noise consistently. As soon as I figure out how to make that book go away, I will update with whether the noise is till there. I suspect this is my problem as whenever there is a book in the pull down menu, it keeps it in ready to start at a single touch. Every time I unlock the fire or hit the power button, I get the noise.

Woot, solved. The audio book sample is gone and I no longer have popping noises.

Very interesting Theo. Can anyone else verify this?

Yes - I admit. I am Batman.

If you have the popping noises, test and see if it shows an audiobook in your drop down menu. Get anything that uses sound that may appear in your drop down menu area. If you have music, movies, or audio books in use, or apps that use sound, turn these off and clear them out of that menu area.

Theo - it would be a good idea to report this to Amazon CS. I bet they'd be very interested to know!

I will do that tomorrow. Since that is what it seems to be, I am not super concerned about it anymore. It's kind of like when you put your headphones in something that is already playing music, you get that little pop noise. Since that's not dangerous to the device, I doubt this is a problem. It's just your Fire in read to start making noise.

I have had the exact experience. I am on my third Kindle Fire HD and all three make the same crackling sound. I see no point in returning this one until after the update. Volume is set quite low. Happens unlocking and randomly playing games.

I called Kindle CS and this was resolved. There was a popping noise whenever I played with a particular game, in this case Solitaire. We turned off notification and sounds for the game and I haven;t noticed any popping sound anymore. Of course now that I am saying this the popping will return :)

Interesting finding, folks. I'm wondering if the problem is associated with specific audiobook titles (and games). I have three audiobooks on my KFHD and haven't experienced the problem.

I've had 2 Kindle Fire HDs with audio problems. First one some of the videos would be playing and the audio would cut out or I start the video and it'd have no audio. I'd have to back it up 10 seconds or pause then play or stop the video and restart it to get the audio to work. The audio problem wasn't just on the videos. It was on the touchscreen keyboard, the game apps and just about anything with audio that I would use. I took that first Kindle Fire HD back to Best Buy where I bought it and swapped it for another one. This one also has the audio issue. This one, however, has popped a couple times. Once last night and once a while ago. I'm taking it back and see if they have any other HD tablets about the same price that might not have the audio and popping issues.

It's possible. I noticed it more with two free sample audio books than I did with the book I purchased.

This is exactly what mine does. Unlocking and random times.

Mine has popped a few times as well. I don't know why but it seems to be working ok.

Snap, crackle and pop. Our Kindle Fire HD (one week old), makes popping noises, although less frequently, but still there.

It still makes the popping noise with the volume turned all the way down.

One would think so. I have sent 2 back within days of receiving them because of the popping. Am on my 3rd one. It pops as well but I'm waiting on the update to see if it fixes the problem. Tired of returning them only to have the same problem. Seems to be working ok otherwise.

I am on my 2nd kindle fire hd. It still pops. Amazon says to set it back to factory default. Has this worked for anyone? I am going to try this, but this is getting to be a problem.Surely Amazon knows about this. It is annoying to be reading and all of a sudden it pops
