Bufo - enjoying the peregrines. I wouldn't think 2 birds would be enough of a gene pool for healthy stock. I guess we will see.

And the time travelers from ten years ago say, "Huh?" ;)

Well, Dawgs, they aren't the only two babies in the state. :) That's definitely a risk for any of these extremely endangered species, even if shepherded back to a decent size population.

Devil Facial Tumour Disease is a tragic but interesting situation, which definitely involves trying to keep genetic diversity in a crashing population.

The "devils" involved here are Tasmanian devils...the marsupial inspiration for the Looney Tunes character.

It's a terrible story, and worth reading (Wikipedia can give you the basics). Essentially, there is a disease that is spread when the devils bite each other on the head (which is not uncommon). Tumours grow on their faces, eventually interfering with eating to the point where they starve.

It's caused a huge decline in population: I've seen predictions that the species could be extinct in the wild by 2035.

There are desperate measures being taken, trying to find immune individuals, trying to establish sufficiently diverse breeding "arks".

Hi All - Am I right that ExoticStates is the last poster on the last thread with "egg-salad" - there's no wish list or details. Does anyone know who ExoticStates is?

@Many Spring Frolicking and Digging Dawgs - lovely idea to start this thread. I'll award a Kindle to the 5,000th poster and a Kindle Fire to the last poster again if you like. Do you want to put a note saying that in the opening post?

WOW! Stephen, Thank You So Much!! I will edit my post and include that. You are so very generous!
I hope you enjoyed your thread as much as we have enjoyed posting.
And of course we couldn't end the party. :)

I do not know Exotic States. The last page was the only time they posted. Perhaps they will come over here and see. If I see a posting on another thread from that person, I will let them know.

Once again, Thank You for your generosity!

How sad that is. And no vaccine in sight. This is a little bit like the frogs.

After the colony collapse disorder started to be publicized, I read up on Mason Bees, and set up places all through out my back yard for them. That has been fun. I've also added alot of different plants for bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Last year I saw very few butterflies. I have seem more this year.
