I always buy the extended warranty because I have 4 kids and the chances of water being spilled on it, or it being dropped or something are pretty high in my house :) The person I spoke to at Best Buy said they would replace it if it could not be fixed, I am ok with that as long as I can use my kindle again :) If it happens again I will probably just return it and buy the KF2. I got 8 months out of it before the port broke which from what others are posting seems to be a pretty good run

Yeah mind died at 6. Well I would buy an extended warranty but I don't want it the day I buy the product as you get 1yr from the maker so then if I buy 2yrs on the spot I am not really getting 3yrs, that annoys me to no end. Mary

Same here and this is extremely fustrating! On the third and about to call for a fourth. I figured our third one would not ship with this issue and be better quality. It charges sometimes, sometimes not. It has the orange charging light sometimes, sometimes not. The green battery bar works sometimes, sometimes not. When it starts doing this it either never charges at all or only partially charges and then it eventually just stops working all together as in no orange light, no green bar movement. And no charging. Hate it! Then the hassle of sending them back. At what point does the company say ok we have to redo the charging area on these things. I'm certainly not buying another one when before we definitely were going to.

If you are still in the 1yr warranty that comes with it after they determine it's defective they will most likely offer to send you another one but they will give you a prepaid mailing label to send the old one back. That is what they did for my friend and I and we got the new ones in 2 days so hardly inconvienced and so far it's been almost 4 months and are new ones charge fine. I did an email chat late at night right away when it happened but I hear it's great to have them call you and do it that way. Mary

Thanks. Bu any chance will geek squad fix it?

Conversegal - Why would you want involve Geek Squad? The charging port is not fixable, but Amazon will send you a new one and a shipping label to return the old one. Contact Kindle Customer Service.

They can't be fixed and why pay someone when amazon will replace it free in the 1yr warranty. I wouldn't touch geek squad with a 10 foot pole. I have known too many people get screwed over by them. My friends laptop messed up and wouldn't boot to the desktop. She didn't take the time to make the recovery disks so I managed to make one on mine and get into the recovery so she could get all her files backed up as she is one that can't take time to back up a million files.

She had the partition on the hard drive to take it to out of the box state so I was gonna do that but then her husband who knows nothing decided not to wait and took it to geek squad. They proceeded to sell him a $200 copy of windows and told him to take it home and install it right over top windows not even do a repair install or anything. He did that so then she was left with 2 copies of windows on the system and a few weeks later that just messed everything up and computer died beyond repair. Was ashame as if she had just used what was on the parition there was no need to spend for a copy of windows and do that. I go to the little computer shop in town that has been here 20yrs and they have never steered me wrong yet. Maybe all geek squads are not like that but I didn't think it was a good experience here and they charge $100 to send the laptop out just to look at it before they will even diagnose. Mary

I just received my first replacement Kindle Fire - the first lost the ability to recharge. I definitely see a pattern here. What a shame as I've found the Kindle to be a great product otherwise. Not looking forward to multiple replacements :( ...in spite of the timely and cooperative service from Amazon. Now does my 1 yr warranty begin over? It will really stink if they just give replacements until the original warrantly expires...anyone know? Thanks

Patricia S. Tucker - Your 1 year warranty begins from your original purchase date.

Also, remember that you normally only hear about the bad things. There are thousands and thousands of happy, satisfied Kindle owners out there. They are just not positing saying "Everything is great and is working fine!"

Believe me, you will probably never get better customer service than you do with Amazon.

The customer service WAS fabulous. No doubt about it. And I LOVE my Kindle...enough to buy my husband one. He is not tech savvy at all, and was very sceptical at first. We were however able to tailor his Kindle to his personal tastes - and he now loves his! That's what's so great about the Kindle Fire - the personalization. Definitely a good overall product, just sad if there is a continuing mechanical problem, and they keep replacing poor mechanics with more poor mechanics.

Well KindleWrite-thanks for making everyone feel stupid. I guess if you have nothing nice to say than just keep it to yourself.

I only had the charging issue which was a known issue but have none of the other problems I hear about and love my fire. I want one of the newer ones but will have to wait and see if Santa thinks I was good this year. Mary

My family has 3 Kindle Fire units and 2 of 3 had the loose power connector issue. Once the issue occurs, you can no longer charge the unit. We are very tech-savvy and user-misuse is always a possibility, but it is doubtful. When I called for support, they were quick to replace both units making me suspect that there may be a product issue or the connector was not as robust as necessary, wearing out too easily and becoming nonfunctional. Their support is very good, but they classify the issue as fix on failure. I was worried because I thought my 3rd unit may fail after the warranty expires. Support said they would 'most likely' make an exception and replace the unit free of charge if it failed due to this issue after the warranty expired... furthering my suspicion. Others may have had charger failures, I did not. Since we have 3 units, I'm able to test the Kindle with multiple chargers. In both cases, it was definitely an issue with the charge-port on 2 of our 3 Kindles.

I noticed my 7 HD wiggles a bit now. It's still charging fine but that looseness concerns me. I'm always perfectly careful, too, not to jar it while its charging.

D. Netzel says:
It is definitely a 'charger connector' issue. My Fire stopped charging and I noticed the loose connector. I was out of warranty, so I decided to open it up and see for myself ( I am pretty fair with electronics). The posts that are used to solder the connector to the board were virtually nonexistent with solder and the connector had come loose. All the pushing and pulling of the connector eventually appeared to have broken the power connections. I simply, soldered the posts back down to the board and carefully resoldered the power connections and all is well. Given this issue and the outstanding support from Amazon, my guess is they may even assist with out of warranty systems if you call and ask. Otherwise, it could turn into a publicity nightmare. By the way, I love my Fire.
