So can you turn the Paperwhite light completely off?

If I turn the light down all the way, and place the PW next to my Basic, while in normal lighting, I cannot tell the difference as far as the light goes. My eyes are very sensitive, and I can't tell the light is on, unless the room is pitch black.

I think this is a non-issue.

My Kindle Touch looks better and has even font density over the whole screen, without some words appearing as light gray and others as dark black. So it's an issue on MY Paperwhite as seen with MY one good eye.

When you press the power button to put it to sleep, there is a brief moment when the screen displays with the light truly off, and it looks like a display I could use.

I thoroughly researched whether the light could be turned off before buying, figuring if I didn't like the light, I could turn it off, and be happy with a higher resolution unlighted screen. I was duly diligent and Amazon should have been, too. That's a non-issue.

I got the strongest feeling there may be some quality control issues here. A lot of people are saying their eyes are sensitive to the light while others are saying its nearly nonexistent. I really wish people could provide pictures :-/

Ok so if not good qualitive pictures then maybe a good qualitive video on YouTube showing what some people are complaining about. It isn't wrong to think some people may just actually have a faulty device. When have you ever seen a new product hit the shelves and everything about it be exactly the same as everybody elses?

For some it is not so much a complaint as an observation.

It would be a pretty simply video. Dark room screen glows, even though front-light set to zero/off.

There is no disputing that this is the case.

I pick oversight that will be resolved sometime in the near future with a kOS update.

I hope this gets fixed with a software update. Even in moderate light I can still tell the light is on.

For all those commenters that were so harsh with the non-issue comments...

Last night I took my Kpw out of its case to do some reading. I had the light in the "zero" position. After finishing, I turned it off via the power button. Guess what, the screen was still glowing in the dark.

Whereas, when you close the cover on the Amazon Kpw case and the light goes completely out, apparently if you have it outside the case, tapping the power button does not turn off the lights. I did not have time to test to see how long the light stays on, but again, it supports that is reasonable that people want to be able to turn the light off completely.

It is certainly reasonable that people do not want a nightlight in the form of a Kpw.

Why would I? To complain about frontlight being detectable, if only barely, in *completely dark room* (as you said yourself in another post) when "awake"? So that I can, say when reaching for it from the nightstand in darkness, see enough to increase the light level without tuning on the bedside lamp?

I certainly hope that Amazon will, it they include "turn off" option, do that with a separate control, so that I don't turn the light off completely by accident.

Closing the Amazon Kpw case does not automatically turn off the light either. It takes a few seconds for it to turn off.

It appears that the documentation is in fact wrong. With that being said, you must decide if you want to accept the product as it actually is. Since they allow returns for 30 days you can send it back if it is problematic for you. Getting mad and ranting about it on a customer forum is not going to change it.

Nothing is bothersome, shady, except, for some users, the knowledge it is not completely off.

@Dragi Raos
Seriously? A Kindle Forum Pro. Criticizing valid Observations?

In most of this world lights off mean off not dim.

Amazon will address this because it is sub-optimal and that matters to them, not you.

Have a nice day.

If the lights are indeed on when you Paperwhite is asleep or all the way off, it is defective. I've tested mine a bunch of times. As soon as I press and release the power button, the lights go off completely within 2 seconds.

Dragi, it's those little zaps you get each time you turn the page. It's exhilarating.
