YA-AA-AHHH!!!!!!!!! So thankful! This solution worked for me without a hitch!

(I was quickly moving toward distress and discomfort. When I finally got some wits about me, this thread was first in my Google search. I agree with Nospin that a good title on a thread that remains specific to the issue with little side chatter most helpful.)

Thank you for your clear reply, John Hodgkinson. You've saved me a trip to the shrink :-)

It didn't work for me. And my husband is handy with all devices. He even tried removing the battery and putting it back in. Nada. Device is dead just after the warranty expired.

when i had my first few kindles, it did that on all of them. if the screen looks cracked from the inside, then there is nothing you can do but send it back and get a replacement.

Shannee,
Be sure to hold the power switch in the off position for a FULL 30 seconds. It works! I needed to do this again today for the second time within a month and it worked for the second time within a month.

Thanks again, John, for the solution. You should get an award.
